The best selection is available if you reserve your products on the website from now until Tuesday at noon, then check out our farmers’ tables at the market on Wednesday for other items. Although they aren’t yet available for pre-order, we had cucumbers and green beans for sale at the market last week. They and other impromptu items might be available again this week, so don’t forget to take a look around. And make sure you plan to participate in Nightbird Books’ celebration event on Wednesday, and try all our yummy samples!

FARM NEWS
T-shirt sales for the fundraiser to get kids to our July Farm Camp who might not normally be able to attend are going well – here is the corrected link – sorry about that! Sales end July 13th, so please consider buying a T-shirt if you have not already. Thanks everybody!!!

MARKET NEWS
Late addition – Russell has butter again, we were a little late getting it listed, for those of you ordered first thing. Also – we are starting to get a good quantity of garlic and potatoes listed, as well as Zephyr Squash. I’m not much of a squash fan, mostly because I wasn’t raised on it I guess. Does anybody have a recipe they’d like to share? I’d love to try something interesting (please don’t suggest putting it in a smoothie, lol!)

See you Tuesday -

Please contact grow@ranchoalegrefarm.com for questions pertaining to Market or Raw Milk. It is very difficult to return phone calls. Remember to interact with us on Facebook and follow us on Meetup to get notification on all our wonderful events and news. If you are interested in Goat’s Milk and can pick up any day but Tuesday, contact Nik The Goat Guy at 404-542-0981. Goats have to be milked every day and a week-end pick-up would be lovely. For right now, we generally have some goat’s milk available during market hours, whether you have placed a market order or not. Please call Nik first to verify. Please contact him first though, we can’t accommodate walk-ins due to hosting private events almost every week-end!

Farm Where Life is Good:  Online Market is OPEN for Business (Week 28)

Our volunteers come in all colors and sizes!

Life on the Farm (Week 28)

Our trial with occultation prior to our winter squash planting looks promising thus far. A couple generations of weeds and weed seeds have hopefully been eradicated under 3wks of plastic. Winter squash is in, a wee-tad bit late (ok, really late), but here’s to hoping for a late fall frost! (Everyone cross their fingers for me now really quick and the positive vibes will make it all the way out here to the farm.) We’ve got some funky giant white pumpkins for a fun trial, and a new Sweet Dumpling variety of squash that was given rave reviews by a colleague of mine.

Before and After: Field 3, Beds 41-50, weed-free and prepped for squash.

We visited with a nice big Fox Snake today who had come in from harvesting our local small pest population out in the fields. It was a good snake day; found another one patrolling our compost heap. Keeping it local and keeping it natural!

Foxy, our local enforcer.

Rows and rows of potatoes are coming in nicely; just starting to see some flowers. Really bummed about the (planned) new potatoes; they are not yet in flower (which is the trigger to go find the little babies.) It was a substituted variety after crop failure of our first choice organic seed from The Maine Potato Lady. So, either it is a later variety or I am just getting ant-sy. (But seems to me it has been long enough! Patience is a virtue I sometimes lack.)

The Colorado Potato Beetle is well represented here at Farm WLIG; they have not only been holding large town meetings in the potato plantings, but they have immigrated to another field, crept under a row cover and set their little babies to munching on the eggplants (another known favorite of the little twirps.) I had the immeasurable joy of witnessing a little potato beetle baby actually stopping to “eliminate” (you choose the correct word of your choice…I can’t write any of them here!) right in front of me. I am learning an awful lot about bug digestion in this job. Not sure what I think about that self-development area….

Starting life as a Purple Potato.

The Market is now open for some herbs and the leafy things.

Ordering will be open from Sunday morning until Monday 8pm. Get your orders in now so harvesting can begin specific to your requests.

Deliveries will be made Wednesday per usual to your chosen Dropsite Location .

Recipes for your consideration

Cabbage is loaded with good stuff; phytonutrients, anti-ulcer properties, and lots of fiber. Serving as a cold salad is always nice, but if you’re looking for something simple to do to serve it as a warm sidedish, consider roasting it, inside or out!

Roasted Cabbage

1 Head of Cabbage, sliced into wedges or quarters depending on size
Note: Leave the dense stem intact and it will hold everything together until eating.
Olive oil, for drizzling
Salt and Pepper to taste
Lemon juice or seasoned rice wine vinegar, for drizzling (optional)

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.

Slice your cabbage into wedges. Lay them on a baking sheet and brush with olive oil. Salt and pepper your wedges to taste.

Bake the cabbage wedges for 20 to 30 minutes until tender and golden brown in spots (baking time will depend on the thickness of the wedges).

Serve immediately. (Drizzling a little lemon juice or seasoned rice wine vinegar right before serving adds a nice kick!)

Alternative: Heat up the grill and keep the house cooler. Place the well oil-brushed wedges/quarters directly on the grill. Keep the flames low and watch closely; move to cooler rack if needed.

Napa cabbage works wonderfully with hot-cold salads of the Asian variety. With a nice marinated protein atop, this flavor-filled salad makes a full meal fairly quickly. If you are not familiar with ginger root, buy a small knuckle in the produce section of the grocery and store it in a sealed plastic bag in the freezer. I use a Microplane zester to quickly prep the root for use in all Asian dishes, straight from the freezer, no need to peel. Adds a sweet, tangy flavor to salads, stirfry, hot/iced tea, lemonade among other things.

Spicy Ginger Tofu-Noodle Salad

1 pkg firm/extra-firm tofu, rectangular ½ in cubes
2 Tbsp canola oil

6 Tbsp olive oil
6 Tbsp seasoned rice vinegar
3 Tbsp soy sauce
2 Tbsp toasted sesame oil
4 tsp minced/zested ginger root
4 minced garlic cloves
2 tsp sugar
1 tsp chili oil
1/2 tsp pepper flakes
4 green onions or 1.5in bunch chives, chopped

1 package fine rice noodles (Asian section of grocery)

½ head Napa cabbage
1 cucumber, diced

Heat 2 Tbsp canola oil in large pan over medium-high heat; braise tofu, turning every few minutes once they are browned on each side. When well crisped, remove from heat, drain on papertowel.

Mix olive oil, vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger root, garlic, sugar, chili oil and flakes, green onions/chives in medium bowl. Add tofu to marinate for a few minutes while you prepare noodles and cabbage.

Meanwhile prepare noodles according to package directions. Drain and set aside to cool.

Slice/shred cabbage nice and fine. Place in bottom of large-ish sized individual serving bowls. Add a bed of noodles atop the cabbage.

Add tofu with marinade back to pan and heat through. Divide equally atop the noodle bed. Serve immediately.

Another twist on noodles and cabbage; a little more sedate.

Napa Cabbage with Noodles

3 Tbs olive oil
8 oz button mushrooms, quartered
½ large head Napa cabbage, cored and cut into 1/2in slices
1 tsp sugar
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
1 Tbs dry sherry
1 cup vegetable stock
1 lb bite-sized noodle, cooked according to package directions
2 scallions or 1in bunch chives, chopped
1/2 cup roasted almonds or cashews, coarsely chopped
Chopped fresh cilantro for garnish

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and sauté the mushrooms until lightly browned.

Add the cabbage, sugar, salt, and pepper and sauté over very high heat until most of the juices have evaporated, 4 to 5 minutes.

Add the cornstarch mixture and stock and stir until the mixture boils and thickens.

Stir in the noodles and heat through.

Garnish with chopped scallions, nuts, and cilantro.

Did You Know…

Air is over 70% nitrogen. We fertilize naturally with nitrogen by enlisting little soil bacteria and several plants in the bean or “legume” family (either “cash crops” that you eat, or cover crops that the soil gets to eat.) Special rhizobial bacteria colonize the roots of legume plants and the plant, if happy with the type, actually set up a factory around the bacteria by creating a little nodule on its rootlets— meet, the nitrogen-producing team. These nodules range in size from a BB pellet to a kernel of corn. They turn pink inside when actively processing nitrogen from the nitrogen gas (N2) found in soil air-pockets. The bacteria contribute an enzyme that helps convert the gas to ammonia (NH3), which the plant uses to make amino acids, the building blocks for proteins. In return, the host plant supplies the bacteria with carbohydrates to fuel the N-fixation process. In annual legumes, N fixation peaks at the flowering stage, but remember, it’s all happening in the roots!

StPete.LocallyGrown.Net:  Special Notice - Summer Market Schedule 2014

SPLG Market goes on Summer Schedule

Valued Customers:
As we head into our fourth summer of serving the St. Petersburg locavore community, we are grateful for your ongoing support of our Market. If you have been with us for awhile, then you know that this summer’s produce and product list is TRIPLE what it was last summer. Unlike last summer when we had more customers than produce, this summer we have more produce than customers. This is only temporary as the summer season cycles in and we still need—and greatly value—your year-round support. We expect this kind of evolution for this pioneering local Market called St. Pete Locally Grown and we are prepared to handle new growth as summer progresses!

OUR SUMMER SCHEDULE Our online Market will open every other week effective this week. This means that the Market will open this coming Monday, July 7th, with orders delivered on Friday as usual. The Market will then close the week of July 14th and re-open on July 21st and so on, until mid-or-end of October. WHEN DEMAND BUILDS FOR IT, we will resume weekly deliveries BEFORE summer’s end if needed. We would like to hear from you about any concerns you have that will keep you from ordering every other week. We want to address each concern so that we may mutually support one another. For a quick glance of our Market schedule, please refer to—and store as a favorite—our Calendar of Events. Thanks to all who are continually promoting us to friends and family!

WEEKLY CUSTOMERS Most of our customers order every other week. The majority of our greens last for 2 to 3 weeks when properly stored. We will still offer domestic fruit whenever available. Of course, frozen foods won’t be an issue. Regarding dairy, here are guidelines for keeping yours fresh up to two weeks. I know these work because my goat kefir lasts a good two weeks or more. A number of dairy products can be frozen too.

MARKET COMMUNITY EVENTS & SPONSORED WORKSHOPS
NO changes here. Our potluck socials will continue on the 4th Saturday of each month. Nathan’s urban farming classes will continue the 2nd and 3rd Saturdays of each month.

VOLUNTEERS GREATLY NEEDED Our volunteer opportunities remain the same this summer and we have lost a few valuable resources recently. We are recruiting new folks to serve the St. Petersburg Community from 2 to 4 hours “per Market week” on Wednesdays thru Fridays. We will train and we promise you will have fun! Please call or email me if you want to meet some fabulous, like-minded people!

Best,
Tina, YOUR Market Manager

ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market is Open!

Good Morning Market,

Hope you’ve had a relaxing and safe holiday weekend full of good food, friends, family, and fun. I always have a tough time accepting the end of a beautiful weekend; the joy of Sunday looming with the threat of Monday. The daily grind really isn’t so bad though, especially not when you can still find the time to throw all that good stuff in the mix. I’m a bit biased, but the market really is something I look forward to, especially now that the taste of Summer brings new flavors each week, including…

  • A big welcome back to the wonderful folks at Rattle’s Garden. They’ve got absolutely beautiful certified organic white clara eggplant, fairy-tale asian eggplant, and sungold cherry tomatoes.
  • I’m a believer that local fruit is one of the easiest ways to convince folks that local really does taste better. The sweetness, tartness, flavors, and personality of an Arkansas strawberry or cantaloupe just can’t be beat. I must say that the freestone peaches from Barnhill Orchards are about as juicy and tasty as I’ve ever had. Snag yourself a basket of these Summer gems under specials.
  • Loads of Arkansas-grown teas from Food for Thought Farm, including anise hyssop, basil, lemon monarda bergamot, catnip, lemon balm, lemongrass, and yellow dock root. All grown in their sustainable food forest, check out advice on recipes and uses under their product listings in Herbs & Spices.
  • Anybody can be a gardener with Garden Wall Pockets from Maison Terre! Made from donated materials, and locally designed and crafted, these wall pockets are ideal for growing in small spaces. The three-section wall pocket will hold smaller ornamentals and herbs, while the two-section wall pocket will hold larger ornamentals and vegetables, including vines, such as cucumbers. Use nails, hooks, screws, or ties to attach them to masonry, wooden, or chain link fences. Proceeds from sales go to Cereus Solutions Sustainability Center. They’ve also got mixed organic edible flowers, the uses of which can only be limited by your imagination.

We’re excited to announce that the University District Neighborhoods Association is hosting a Vegetable Swap & Trade next Saturday, July 12th from 8am-noon in the parking lots of Curran Conway Park. Gardeners from throughout Pulaski County are invited to swap and trade vegetables, fruits, eggs, flowers, and plants from their gardens’ bounties with other gardeners. All items are to be swapped or traded with no cash being exchanged. The event will allow gardeners to visit, gather information on new items, share gardening tips and recipes, and share the excesses of their gardens. The best part is, any leftover vegetables can be donated to the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance at the end of the swap & trade.

Hope to see you there and that you have a great conclusion to your holiday weekend!

Her latest creation, Hummingbird Bread, with some of the same ingredients as the famous Southern Hummingbird Cake, (pineapple, pecans, banana) is a great Breakfast Bread or wonderful treat in the afternoon! Her Rolls, Paleo Bites and Cookies have all been a big hit on the Markets and all of us Gluten Free Folks appreciate her adventuresome spirit in creating wonderful treats that we can enjoy! I have to admit that her Chocolate Chip Cookies are truly my downfall! They are truly ‘made in heaven’!

Jay and Patti of Dances With Bees have Honey offerings as well as some other great products! Use honey in your Lemonade for a great flavor! Great in Tea, also! I ordered a jar of Jay’s Golden Beeswax Food Grade Wood Finish several weeks ago! My cutting boards and wooden utensils were in desperate need of conditioning and I was so pleased with this product!

Patti makes some outstanding Natural Body Products from the honey and beeswax. Her Gardener’s Friend Soap works to get those ‘playin-in-the-dirt’ hands clean and keeps them soft. Fantastic product!

The Happy Cows belonging to Sam Jones of Cedar Rock Dairy continue to produce wonderful milk (for our pets)! The cream line on the jars these last couple of weeks has been impressive! Keep up the good work, ladies! Located in Butler, Georgia, Sam’s cows enjoy grazing on 1200 acres of this Certified Organic Farm and we are fortunate that he is willing to transport this fresh, creamy milk to us. Working together, we need to ensure that we meet a minimum order for each Market so it remains economically viable for deliveries to continue! Share the goodness of Cedar Rock Dairy milk with friends and family!

Rusty Repp of Little Tots Estate offers the sweetest goat milk I have had since I was a child, growing up in Ohio! The milk comes from Nigerian Dwarf Goats who are known to have the highest Butterfat of any milking goats! The milk from Little Tots also makes wonderful cheese! It is great for pets with stomach issues, also! To keep The Black Lab, healthy, he enjoys some everyday!

… this and that …

When you ‘shop the Market’, it is similar to strolling through a Traditional Farmers’ Market in that you are ordering your items directly from the Farmer/Grower/Producer. There have been a couple of instances recently of people being unhappy with the product they received. As the Market Manager, I want to ensure that everyone is happy with the quality of the products and I am happy to help if there is an issue. However, since the purchase is directly from the Farmer, it is necessary for you to email or call the Farmer with your concern. You can click the Grower Tab at the top of the page and get the Farmer contact information by viewing the individual detail. Please email the Farmer and copy me, or call the Farmer and let me know, so that I am ‘in the loop’. Our Farmers work hard to bring you ‘the best of the best’ and they want to know if something is less than expected. Refunds and/or replacements are at the discretion of the Farmer.

Sometimes items are ordered from one Farmer and when I run the final reports, I see that an item has been canceled. In an effort to ensure that you get what you are expecting, I will check with another Farmer to see if they have the same item. I then ‘order’ the item for you and you are given the option at Market pickup to ‘replace’ the original item with the same or similar item from another Farmer. This is not a typical ‘service’ of any other Locally Grown Market, but is done in an effort to make sure you are not ‘left in a lurch’ in not getting what you have ordered. It is not always possible to replace items, but please know that I do my best.

After Church, The Black Lab and I will be spending some time in the Garden and mowing the yard. The cooler weather these last few days has certainly been a blessing! I hope that you all enjoyed time with family and friends over this 4th of July Holiday weekend! I certainly did!

I wish you all a happy day and a wonderful week!

It is time to say – thank you for taking the time to read this missive…

Please know that we appreciate the support of All Saints Lutheran Church, Crossfit O-Zone Gym and the Hamilton Mill Community for the use of the great spaces for Market. We are grateful for you and for your support of our dedicated, LOCAL Farmers/Growers and Artisans.

I do ask that you read the blog at some point so you are aware of what is happening with Market!

Volunteers Needed

My heart is warmed by the response to the request for volunteers and we are slowing getting to the point that folks can work just once a month! We still need a few more folks to make that a reality, so if you are interested, please contact Market Volunteer Coordinator, Chance Claar-Pressley. Thank you Chance! You can email Chance at chancita@gmail.com .

“Thank yous” go out to Kathy and Keb Barnes, Susan Coker, The Wallace Family and Reggie Ramos, our newest Farmer of Grow With The Flow who all volunteered at the Lilburn Market on Thursday; Karen Thain and her son and Sarah Rockey who volunteered for the Hamilton Mill Market on Wednesday!

We still need YOU! Can you spare a few hours once a month? Without you as Members, the Market would not exist and now the Market needs your help!

Please click Volunteer Information for the Lilburn Market for the particulars! Thanks for your help!

If you have a couple of hours to spare between 10:00am and Noon on Tuesday, please consider volunteering at the Crossfit O-Zone Lawrenceville Market. This is prep and setup for the Tuesday Market as well as packaging meat orders for all Markets. Please contact Maryanne at 404-432-4337.

and now for the news…

Farmer Updates

Farmer Ricky Brown of Back River Farm is offering Kale, Scarlet Red Salad Turnips, Harkuei Turnips, Arugula, New Potatoes and Zephyr Squash. Since many of us enjoyed the tiny yellow and green Zephyrs last year, I asked him to make these available again. Perfect for ‘dipping’ in your favorite homemade dressing as a snack or raw side dish!

Cedar Seeder has added Micro (Veggie) Wraps to their offerings! These handmade, fresh powerhouse goodies are full of 11 super Mircrogreens deliciously surrounded by either Rice Paper or Nori wraps! Lots of ‘scrumptiousness’ served with a delectable sauce! a definite “must try”! In addition to their Cedar, handmade planters, you can find their Microgreens for Pets combos for Cats and Dogs and for us humans: Arugula, Basil, Broccoli, Kale, Radish, Sunflower and Wheatgrass! Ready to be snipped and added to smoothies, salads or your favorite juice!

Doug of Doug’s Garden is offering: Whole Garlic, Hakurei Turnips, ‘Kossack’ Kohlrabi (read “huge”) Leaf Lettuce Salad Mix and Carrots. In addition, he has 5 different Produce Boxes to choose from: Basic Seasonal Box, Early Summer Box, Herb Lovers Box, Root Lovers Box and the new Tomato Lovers Box! Doug shared samples of his delicious ‘V-7’ Tomato based juice with folks at the Lilburn Market this past week. Be sure and pick up a copy of his wonderful recipe this week at all Market pickups!

Miss Vicky of Fry Farm is back and is offering: ‘Candy Onions’, ‘Cippolini’ Onions, ‘Red Candy Apple’ Onions’, ‘Superstar’ Onions, Shallots, Squash and Zucchini! Vicky has listed ‘Superstar Onions’ as a Weekly Special – great deal, so be sure and check it out! Also, Vicky has added ‘Braided Garlic’! Not only is this garlic a yummy addition to your savory dishes, the Garlic Braid looks great hanging in your kitchen. Brings back childhood memories for me! Constantly adding new items as they come available, Vicky works hard to provide wonderful products!

The Veggie Patch is providing a good selection of wonderful fresh early Summer veggie offerings and have fresh Herbs listed as well! 3 types of Basil, Chives, Mint, Oregano,2 kinds of Parsley, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme and Medicinal Herbs Chamomile and Lavender. From Pork Tenderloin, which is delicious, marinated and cook on the grill to the many varieties of Sausage, Pork Chops and Longaniza (hot dogs), any cut of Beef you want, Lynda has us covered! Try Chicken Wings on the grill!

David and Shalley Carrell of Carrell Farms are at our Markets as well as most of the popular Traditional Farmers’ Markets around the area! Check out their offerings from their Bulk Ground Buff to Steaks and Roasts! Delicious! Be sure and remove from grill or skillet at least one level from how you like your meat cooked! In other words, if you like it Medium, remove the meat when it reaching Medium Raw and let is sit covered for 10 minutes before serving! Turns out perfect every time!

Both Golden Farms and Rocky Acres offer fresh eggs from pastured chickens fed organic, soy and GMO free feed. Periodically Cara puts notes on the cartons to let you know what special treats her ‘girls’ have gotten in addition to their regular diet of bugs they find out in the pasture! Cute idea to let the children check out what the chickens who produce the eggs they have on their table are eating!

My Daily Bread Bruce and Dabrielle are back! From Challah to German Rye, Chocolate Zucchini Bread to Cookies, Dabrielle’s Organic, Fresh Baked Goods are sure to please. In order for them to deliver from their wonderful Bakery located in Cleveland, GA, we must meet a minimum, so be sure and get your items ordered today!

I tease Marie of Bakery on Brooks that she is my ‘mad-scientist-baker-friend’!

I hope everyone had a safe Fourth of July. The Market is back open this morning with some vendors on vacation and others returning. Wild Flours returns this week and will be back on their every other week schedule. Carol’s Vibration Cooking, Erdmann Farm, and Casa Segovia-Paz are on vacation this week only.

Reminder for Nashville customers:
There will be no deliveries this week, July 10.

Rocky Glade Farm brings back local honey as well as their garlic and purple sun potatoes.

Prospect Hill Farm returns this summer with his blueberries.

There are plenty of squash and zucchini available from Flying S Farm, Rainbow Hill Farm and White city Produce and Greenhouse.

We have a new product from JENuine Health by Chef Jenny. A note from Jenny:

Munchy Mocking Bird Mix

This snack sets itself apart from the others because it is not sweet. It is a crunchy mix of seeds, gluten-free grains, and minced onions that have been toasted in olive oil and then combined with garlic and spices. If you are a garlic bread fan, you are sure to love this mix.

Try it on:

Potatoes
Veggies (broccoli, kale, swiss chard)
Hummus
Pasta salads

Tomatoes & Mozzarella

There are plenty of other products available this week. Browse the categories to see what your will find.

Thanks so much for your support of Stones River Market, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. We’ll see you on Wednesday at Southern Stained Glass at 310 West Main Street from 5:00 to 6: 30 pm!

Recipes

Please, share your recipes with us on the Recipes tab. We’d all love to know how you use your Stones River Market products, so we can try it too! I am taking a break from recipes this week. If you have created a dish and want to share with everyone, please send it to me.

Lin Richmond shared this recipe with us and has used it regularly for her cherry tomatoes.

Red, White, & Blue Salad

INGREDIENTS
1 pint cherry tomatoes, whether red, orange, yellow or a combination, stemmed
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon cane sugar or maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon fine-grain sea salt, plus more to taste

DIRECTIONS
1. To make the roasted cherry tomatoes, preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C). Adjust the oven rack to the top third of the oven.
2. Slice the tomatoes in half and place them on a rimmed baking sheet.
3. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, sugar or maple syrup, and a scant 1/2 teaspoon salt. Pour the mixture over the tomatoes and gently toss until well coated. Arrange the tomatoes in a single layer, cut-side up, and roast, without stirring, until the tomatoes shrink a bit and start to caramelize around the edges, 45 to 60 minutes.
4. Nibble the roasted cherry tomatoes straight off the baking sheet. Or, if you aren’t using them immediately, let them cool and then scrape them into a clean glass jar along with any olive oil that was left in the baking dish or sheet.
Sometimes I top off the jar with an added splash of olive oil. The tomatoes will keep for about 1 week in the refrigerator.

I thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

John
