Cedar Grove Farm:  Cedar Grove Farm CSA Availability for July 9

Ever wake up in the middle of the night and remember you forgot to do something? Oh yeah, Dylan and Caitlyn are in Florida for some well deserved R&R, and I was supposed to send the CSA availability message this week.

Okay, we are now open for business and the tomatoes are coming in. Two new items this week are a pint of mixed varieties of cherry tomatoes and our first slicer tomato – Big Boys. Everything else is back from last week. Hope you find some of your favorites.

And, one more reminder – Lindsey’s Culiary Market is open again and the pickups are back at Lindsey’s kitchen and at the new venue of the Downtown Athens Farmers Market at the Creature Comforts Brewery on the corner of Hancock and Pulaski (the old Snow Tire building).

Now I will go back to sleep and let you place your order for this week.

Regards, Jay

Middle Tennessee Locally Grown:  Market News

Manchester Locally Grown online farmers’ market is now open for ordering. Vegetables, plants, eggs, herbal & handmade products, popcorn & granola, desserts, & sunflower seeds are available this week. Take a look at our offerings and support your friends and neighbors who produce these quality items on their own farms. Remember: ordering will close on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

We have some additions to the products on the market this week:

  • Casey Family Farm has added a “special” – order two half-gallons of creamline milk, and you will pay a discounted price.
  • Fresh-Cut Zinnia Bouquets from White City Produce & Greenhouses
  • Several new herbs, fresh-cut at the farm, from a couple of our farmers.
  • Summer Bibb lettuce from Frontier Family Farms
  • Dogwood Valley Greenhouse has updated their availability list, and added some new types of lavender plants. It’s still fine to plant if you take care to water new transplants frequently and deeply.
  • Are you late planting your vegetable garden this year? No problem! Dogwood Valley Greenhouse also has is selling a good assortment of vegetable plants for the Trail Life group (similar to Boy Scouts) in Manchester. These fund-raiser vegetable plants are in good potting mix in gallon pots. The boys have tomato plants for $5 and pepper plants for $3, noticably less than the big box stores. The tomatoes are very big and strong, with some flowers. The peppers are somewhat smaller but very healthy. They have several different varieties of each. To order, e-mail me directly. I will deliver orders to this week’s market.
  • Don’t forget to watch in the next couple of weeks for the addition of products by two new farmer/producers.

  • Thanks so much for your support of Manchester Locally Grown Market, all of our growers, local food, and our right to eat it. Don’t forget to spread the word about our wonderful market to everyone you know.

(L to R) Bibb Lettuce from Frontier Family Farms, Creamline milk in half gallons from Casey Family Farms, Small-grained Heirloom Popcorn from Wayne Diller, Fresh-Cut Zinnia Bouquet and Fresh Sage from White City Produce & Greenhouses.

    What is a Blackcap?

It is a native black raspberry; and one of the healthiest berries on the planet. They are lower in sugar than most berries and also contain a lot of fiber (around 8 grams per cup). They contain large amounts of anthocyanins. They are also one of the most well-researched berries, especially in the area of cancer prevention.

    Market News

Hello! I returned back to town today after being away all week, and everything seems just as I left it. I’ve looked around for local food-related events happening this week to tell you about, but didn’t see any. So, I’ll just keep things short and let you all go right to ordering.

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

    Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at city hall. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is open throughout the week here in Athens, and you can find more information about them here: www.athenslandtrust.org. The Washington-Wilkes Farmer’s Market in Washington is open every Saturday 9-12 behind the Washington Courthouse. The Oconee County farmers market is open Saturday mornings in front of the Oconee County Courthouse. The other area markets I haven’t mentioned have yet to open for the season, so far as I know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
