This Week’s Market Availability is going to be low as a couple of main providers take a week to recoup and transition into a higher gear. LEILANI’S and MY DAILY BREAD are both down for the week.

But do not despair. More and different Produce will be available for May 22nd, and maybe fresh Berries as well, and we’re only 2 or 3 weeks away from the season’s first Tomatoes! So, good times are coming!

We are a small 14 acre family farm located just down the street in Statham, Ga. We specialize in non-gmo, non-soy, pastured poultry & eggs. We also grow many types of small fruits and vegetables with non-certified organic methods. Featured is the “Back in Time bird” raised the old fashioned way.

Workshops
Join us for a workshop!
You’ll be amazed by the plethora of information and lessons offered by our fantastic workshop instructors. Our workshops cover subjects such as gardening, nutrition, nutrient dense foods, natural remedies, essential oils, and much more!
Our goal is to host one workshop a week which will always be on Tuesday. The workshop schedule will rotate from 10:30 AM, 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM for the community’s convenience. The farm brings workshops to the community as an outreach to share the wealth of knowledge we have attained over the years. We do not charge for these events but allow the speakers to charge a fee to cover their time and supplies. We hope everyone will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our mothers out there. We appreciate everything you do especially feeding your family locally grown and made products.

Botanical Harmony is taking a break this week.

Cedar Thicket Farm is back on the market with fresh dill, oregano, cilantro and fresh or dried chamomile for tea. Three types of peonies: pink, white and the famous Sarah Barnhart.

Rainbow Hill Farm has added some kale and garden plants to the Market this week.

Strawberries are available in abundance this week from both Rainbow Hill Farm and Rocky Glade Farm. Rocky Glade Farm has also added carrots and kale to the Market.

There are plenty of other products available this week. Browse the categories to see what your will find.

Welcome our newest grower, Heritage Hogs from Christiana, they’ve listed live heritage breed pigs on the market, and plan to sell kielbasa and lard in the future.

KIC Produce has a plethora of spring veggies on the market, new products include Spring Onions, Broccoli, Beets, Blue Curled Scotch Kale, and Peas.

We have quite a few fresh cut herbs on the market, cilantro, spearmint, oregano, parsley, and basil.

DeepSet Farm has listed radishes, arugula, head lettuce, and some mid-sized red russian kale.

Our meat growers have updated their products with many more cuts of pork, beef, and chicken.

Solace farm has listed plenty of duck eggs on the market – here’s your chance to give them a try!

Petalland has listed 5 different Irises on the market, under ‘Live Plants’ and ‘Bulbs and Tubers’ category.

Over 3 inches of rain so far with more in the forecast! Actually the rain was needed by many Growers. Did you know that not all Grower’s need rain at the same time? Of course it depends on the type of crops grown, and the stage of growth, but it also depends on the lay of their land. Most traditional fields are flat which can lead to standing water if too much falls to quickly, or over the course of a couple of days. But here at Cedar Rock Ridge, our garden is at the crest of a high ridge. We have never had standing water here so any rain in welcome.

Several customers have asked about one of our long-time favorite Growers, Arkansas Natural Produce. I spoke with Jay and Deanna and they apologized for the hiccup in delivery. They are working hard to deliver to many markets in the area and transporting their wonderful produce to so many stops takes an awful lot of time on Fridays. The solution we came up with is that they will deliver to their 2 most distant markets every other week. This week they will deliver to Hot Springs, and next week they will deliver to Conway. They will try that cycle for a while and see how it works.

Special sale at ABC Greenhouse & Herb Farm: Check out all the clearance prices on tomato plants, herb plants, and other items. Great prices to get some nice variety in your garden.

Barnhill Orchards has several Harvest Specials offering reduced prices.

Come early on Friday for the best selection from the EXTRAS table.

ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market Is Open


As the weather recharges our aquifers, consider the pleasure of ordering watered food from a dry couch. The market is open, and you don’t even need to put on your mud boots to shop.

Yesterday, the market tables were overflowing with beautiful produce. Lately, the Brassicas are strong contenders for our cravings. These sulfur-rich foods such as Broccoli, Bok Choy, and Kale accentuate our tables with bright and dark greens splashed with marooned reds and milked whites. But color isn’t the only delightful aspect of our local produce. These Brassicas not only fit within our cultivated cravings, but they also bolster our microbiomes. According to recent studies, the host of bacteria and archaea in our guts (which help digest and extract needed nutrients) are thankful for the sulfur-infused foods such as Broccoli. As the ecosystem in our gut breaks down food through fermentation, everything from nutrients to immune-boosting molecules to gas is released. (Warning: If you struggle with instilling table etiquette in your children, make sure they aren’t reading over your shoulder.) According to research, as our inner microbiomes convert healthy foods such as Brassicas into energy, they produce… ehm …sulphoraphane, a gas strongly associated with a reduced risk of cancer. I know I’m taking considerable risks here since this is only my second week in writing the weblogs, but look, science is science. Healthy foods induce healthy effects—despite our cultural misgivings. Further, don’t blame me; blame NPR who publishes this kind of stuff.

In the meantime, eat Brassicas with courage and confidence. Here’s to good eating and forgiving friends and family.

May is National Strawberry Month, National Egg Month, and National Asparagus Month. We are so pleased that we have farmers who sell all of these products! Here are some recipes for both of these products:

Strawberry Spinach Salad with Candied Pecans

Serves: serves 4 to 6

Ingredients:

2 tbsp butter
1 cup pecan halves
2 tbsp brown sugar
6 oz baby spinach leaves
1½ cups sliced strawberries, stems removed
¼ cup crumbled goat cheese (or feta cheese if desired)
balsamic vinaigrette

Instructions:

p. Melt the butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Toss in the pecans and brown sugar, stirring to coat. Cook over medium heat until the sugar begins to caramelize (about 3 minutes). Spread out pecans on a wax paper lined baking sheet to cool.

In your salad bowl layer the spinach leaves, strawberries, goat cheese and pecans. Don’t pour dressing on salad until ready to serve. Enjoy!

SCOTCH EGGS

6 hard cooked eggs cooled and peeled
1 lb pork breakfast sausage
2 cups breadcrumbs (more if needed)
1/2 cup flour or cornstarch
3 eggs beaten

Heat oil in deep-fryer or deep skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

Place eggs in saucepan and cover with water. Bring to boil. Cover, remove from heat, and let eggs sit in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water, cool and peel, and dry.

Flatten the sausage and make a patty to surround each egg. Very lightly flour the egg. Flatten a sausage patty and wrap an egg, sealing it around the egg. Coat with beaten egg. Roll in bread crumbs, slightly pressing crumbs onto sausage to cover evenly.

Deep fry until golden brown, or pan fry while making sure each side is well cooked.

Eat out of hand or serve with a mustard sauce.

(You may either cook the eggs until hard cooked or slightly runny yolks. Totally up to you!)

Roasted Garlic Asparagus

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
8 cloves fresh garlic, minced
1 teaspoon onion powder
2 tablespoons fresh finely chopped parsley
2 pounds thin asparagus, ends trimmed
Fleur de sel or coarse sea salt
Freshly ground black pepper

PREPARATION

Preheat oven to 400°F.

Line a large jelly-roll pan with parchment paper. Set aside.

In a small pot, heat the oil, garlic, onion powder, and parsley on medium-low heat. Cook for 3 minutes, until the garlic mixture is fragrant but not browned.

Spread the asparagus in a single layer on the prepared pan. Lightly sprinkle with coarse sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Drizzle on the garlic-oil mixture.

Roast for 8-10 minutes, until the asparagus are bright green; do not overcook.

Transfer to a platter and serve hot.
