Spa City Local Farm Market Co-op:  ABC tomato and pepper plants $1 each!

From ABC greenhouse, get their plants while you can!

We have reduced our pepper and tomato plants down to $1.00. This will be the last time we will be offering plants this season. Since we have become a seasonal greenhouse and farm, we will be closing down June 1, 2014 till later in the Fall. We may resume in October, 2014 depending on how the summer goes!

Have a great summer. Thanx

MARKET TUTORIAL
Don’t miss our helpful shopping hints now posted as a link at the top of every web page on St. Pete Locally Grown. Check it out and then share it with anyone who asks about us! Thanks so much to Volunteer Jeff Yentzer for his dedication to helping our Market succeed within the St. Petersburg Community.

SO MUCH TO SEE!
Customers do you know there are too many items to assign as featured on the online website marquis? Although you may shop directly from the marquis by selecting an item, you may be missing out on a variety of that produce that is listed elsewhere with maybe a better price! That’s why is it always better to scan the list of items in alpha order or, better yet, do a search for “kale” if you want to see all types from all Growers. it’s the best way to narrow down your choices and compare pricing, etc. quickly if you are concerned about missing out on limited items.

Equitable Veggie Pricing

What price can you put on FRESH? As you might imagine, it is difficult for us to compare our pricing with that of local retailers because our produces cannot be equitably compared. Our chemical-free, locally grown produce is usually harvested within 12 to 24 hours of delivery compared to (so much of it) that which is trucked in and stored before a customer can examine and purchase. What price can you assign to “truly fresh” and still keep it affordable? Even though we are chemical-free and not certified organic in all cases, our produce is fresher than most USDA produce sold by local retailers. Our pricing reflects our philosophy that healthy fresh chemical-free produce has to be affordable for the general population. Every day, we strive to meet this challenge.

Grower News

STRAWBERRY PASSION FARMS
All orders from this Certified Organic Grower must be in by Wednesday @9AM or you will miss out. I have to place my order with them at that time. So order from them first (they have unlimited volume!) and shop for the rest at your leisure. I had hoped for blueberries this week but they are gone for the season! HOWEVER, we have stringbeans, cucumbers, and black spicy Spanish radishes so take advantage now from our new Grower in Thonotossassa. Their farm will likely close down in the next 3 weeks but we are committed to partner in the fall. UNTIL THEN, please take advantage of what they have available.

SUMMER GROWERS ON BOARD! WILL YOU BE A CUSTOMER THIS SUMMER?
As far as we know, we’ll have plenty of produce this summer to serve your voracious appetites for freshly harvested, locally grown, chemical-free produce. So far we have commitments from Brenon’s Homegrown, Faithful Farms, Glory Road Gardens, Nathan’s Natural Veggies, Pioneer Settlement Garden, The Faith House, The Dancing Goat, and Toad Stool Ponds. We sincerely appreciate our customers who inform us that they are leaving for the summer. It helps us not to wonder why their orders stop coming! THANKS IN ADVANCE to all our summer Growers AND summer Customers. We need ALL of your participation to sustain this local Market especially during the hot months ahead.

LOOKING FOR A NEW LETTUCE EXPERIENCE?
Do a product search on our Market for beautiful salad mixes foraged from the urban food forests of Nathan’s Natural Veggies & Brenon’s Homegrown. Salad dressing recipes are included on many of the product descriptions. These mixes will be available all summer long and offer a nice change of pace to the lettuces of which you are more familiar. Here is a new Paleo-Style French Dressing I tried recently! It was a big hit at Saturday night’s potluck.

Message from Your Market Manager

SOMETHING’S BURNING… tada-tada-ta-ta… SOMETHING’S BURNING
Not sure what’s happening but I am pretty sure we have hit a milestone this week. Our Market is seeing the WIDEST VARIETY OF PRODUCE ever listed online and the VOLUME IS STEADILY increasing due to expanding grower commitment. Can you say “Alleluia!”? BTW, where else can you buy 1 pound of collards for $1? I am estimating that we have no less than 4 varieties of eggplant and kale and spinach, 12 varieties of herbs and greens, and LOTS of tomatoes and carrots and beets at last. Faithful Farms has got some flat leaf spinach and will be having young string beans soon. It may be a coincidence and temporary but I’ll take it as an omen that we are “arriving”. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU for the support. Please keep spreading the word and they will come!

YOUR ASSIGNMENT SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT…
Please help us spread the word about our new 6-month $50 membership promo offering for first time members of St. Pete Locally Grown.

IF FRUIT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU
OK, I broke down and bought Certified Organic apples from Chile. They are just $4.99 for 3# at RO! I cried “Uncle!” as I SO missed my apples. Go get them while they last! They are small but juicy and crunchy. YUM. Please tell them that St. Pete Locally Grown sent you over!

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST CUSTOMERS!
Once you have submitted your order, if in doubt about what you owe, you can always confirm what you have been charged for by checking your account history and viewing your most current invoice. Instructions on how to do that are on our Q&A page under the question entitled Since you don’t provide an invoice with delivery, how do I know what I owe? Also, since your vegetables are picked fresh within 24 hours of delivery, they should be lasting for WEEKS in your refrigerator. When you accept delivery, please take a few minutes to inspect your order to protect your vegetables from unnecessary spoilage. Lastly, it is imperative that you understand our policy on Unclaimed Orders found on our Q&A page. When you make a purchase you are agreeing to abide by this policy.

Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 FArm, week of June 1st 2014

Feels like summer, first calf came last week, on top of 6 puppies, 7 goslings, 46 chicks and 17 lambs since April 28th. 5 or 6 more calves to go.

Our annual Strawberry Summer Solstice Potluck is fast approaching, Sunday June 22, in the afternoon. Mark your calendars to bring the family. A separate notice will go out shortly.

Maremma puppies for sale in about 6 weeks. Very intelligent, gentle, beautiful large breed, not for small properties. An ancient stock guardian dog. More later. Those who come to the farm know Rama and Sheba (no Rama is not the dad) but they both are excellent examples of the breed.

The greenhouse is running riot with weeds, which is why I love gardening in there in the cool/cold season: NO weeds.
So much extra work. How many weeks till the first farmers market opens? That’s my winding down day for veggies. We’re concentrating on fall crops and winter storage.

This past weekend was the big Permaculture weekend with Peter Bane visiting here and several garden farms in Erin ON. On Wed evening he’s did a public talk for Transition Erin at the Anglican church on Main St., an hour north of Dundas. Was a standing-room only crowd to hear: Learning how you might apply permaculture principles in your own backyard.

Says Peter:"The urban landscape has swallowed vast swaths of prime farmland across North America. Imagine how much more self-reliant our communities would be if 30 million acres of lawns were made productive again.

Permaculture is a practical way to apply ecological design principles to food, housing, and energy systems; making growing fruits, vegetables and livestock easier and more sustainable."

The Permaculture Handbook is a step-by-step, beautifully illustrated guide to creating resilient and prosperous households and neighborhoods, complemented by extensive case studies of four successful farmsteads and market gardens. http://permaculturehandbook.com/

Four families signed on for mini-consults with Peter last weekend, so after that, I could arrange a gathering so you-all could hear what it entailed and was it worth it. Three Cheers for the EARLY ADOPTERS!

Now was I writing you about Old 99 farm market? yes. Veggies now mature in the greenhouse: lettuces, beet greens, chard, collards. Eggs are selling out every week, love it.
Most of you are in for advance orders on roasting chickens. Still have room for more tho.

Northeast Georgia Locally Grown:  Locally Grown - Availability for May 28, 2014

Hey Local Food Lovers,

Happy Memorial Day! Hopefully everybody is relaxing and enjoying themselves today. We’re fortunate to have a little break at the beach but we been munching on North Georgia treats we packed with us the whole time. In fact our whole family got to enjoy a huge Leah Lake salad with grated carrots and kohlrabi from Taylor Creek Farm. Tomorrow we’re gonna fry up some BG farms sausages, and we’ve been toting fresh strawberries to the beach in a cooler everyday. We’re probably snacking better than anybody down here.

We’re gonna be quick today so there’s just two things we want to mention. First, were preparing for the Locally Grown expansion (Gainesville opens for it’s first sales in less than two weeks) and recently realized we need to invest in a new freezer to accomodate all the ice blocks we need to keep stuff cold, and to keep meat frozen. Before going out and buying a new one we figured we should ask our friends and supporters if they happen to know of anyone trying to get rid of a freezer (or even a fridge with a freezer) that we could acquire for cheap or free. Doesn’t need to be fancy. Any tips would be appreciated. Just send an e-mail to me at soque@windstream.net.

Second, we’re only a month away from the Georgia Mountains Farm Tour on June 28 and 29. In addition to having brochures and passes on sale now (only $30 through June 16, then $35 after – you can just add it to your cart – then right a separate check to GMFN when you pickup on Wedensday) we also are seeking some help to make sure the TOUR is a success.

If you’d like to VOLUNTEER to help one of our FARMS receive guests during the tour it would be a great way to assist the cause and make some good food friends for life. We’re still looking for about 8-9 volunteers for both Saturday and Sunday. If you volunteer for 5 hours on one day, you can attend the tour for free the other day , and get a free FARM TOUR t-shirt! It’s a super cool way to see a bunch of farms that sell through Locally Grown and help our network raise funds that pay for our insurance policies and help market the region as a region with good Local Food! To volunteer e-mail Maggie the day you’d like to volunteer and she’ll let you know which farms we’re still trying to pair with volunteers. Her e-mail is gmfnfarmtour@gmail.com.

For all the details on the TOUR visit the website

Keep telling your friends about our Gainesville opening in just a week and a half!

Atlanta Locally Grown:  Available for Saturday May 31

Yes, the market is open. Sorry for the delay. We had an exciting graduation party for my two sons yesterday. We had a nice pig roast, with lots of fresh veggies and a huge cake.
We were able to get our pigs to the processor last week and get them picked back up. So we have lots and lots of fresh pork. We have everything from ground pork, hot and mild sausage, ribs, thick and thin sliced ham, shoulder roast and more. The bacon takes an additional 10 days so look for that later.
With the temps rising we will see the greens start to drop off so order up.

Thank you all for your support. We appreciate every order. I ask that you please remember when you order I pay the farmers for their products. If you don’t pick up it cost me, not the farmer.
The market is open from Monday to Wednesday and pick up is on the following Saturday at your selected market; Brookhaven Farmers Market, Piedmont Green Market or the Sandy Springs Farmers Market.

Thank you all for your support,
Brady
