Recipes

Spicy Skillet Turnip Greens

Prep time: 5 mins

Cook time: 20 mins
Total time: 25 mins

A quick recipe for spicy skillet turnip greens for a comforting, home-cooked meal.

Serves: 6

Ingredients
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium onion, cut into wedges
1 pound turnip greens, cleaned and chopped
¼ cup water
pinch brown sugar
? teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to preference)

Instructions

Drizzle olive oil into skillet over medium heat.

Add onion and cook until just tender, about 3 minutes. Then add ½ of turnip greens. Allow to cook down and add the remainder of the greens.

As the second half of turnip greens cook down, add water, brown sugar and red pepper flakes. Adjust the amount of red pepper to your personal taste.

Once all the greens are cooked down and the flavor is where you want it, remove from heat and enjoy!

Market News

Happy Memorial Day! This weekend brings to mind my brother, a retired U.S. Army Ranger. He served in Afghanistan and Iraq, then earned a law degree, and now works for a nonprofit legal firm that focuses on human rights. I am incredibly proud of all he has accomplished, and I know what he has sacrificed along the way.

I’m sure that like me, many of you have close loved ones who have served their country in one way or another, and who sacrified greatly for it. As you go about what are sure to be awesome, fun-filled weekend plans, please take a moment to honor them.

Be on the lookout for next week’s e-mail update, which will have a fresh, new look!

The customary reminder about our schedule: order between now and Monday at noon. Delivery takes place from 9:00 until 11:30 on Wednesday morning. If you live in downtown Greeneville or Tusculum, you can meet us at Takoma Hospital, or you can order delivery right to your door!

Otherwise, you can pick up your orders at Rural Resources on Thursday evening when we host our seasonal suppers (you can arrange other times to pick up by e-mailing mfmmanager@ruralresources.net or calling 423-636-8171).

Thanks for your support of fresh, local food!

Local Product Highlights

Now about those fresh farm products!

New this week, we have turnip greens, an old southern favorite. See this week’s recipe for a quick, nontraditional way to prepare them.

We also have french breakfast radishes, a two tone radish which is milder and more tender than the more traditional Champion variety.

There are beautiful sage plants available. The herb itself has a variety of culinary and practical uses, and it also produces gorgeous flowers that attract beneficial critters to your garden.

Browse the whole list here.

Thank you for helping to connect farms, food and families by purchasing locally produced food that is healthy, fresh, and delicious!

Jonesborough Locally Grown:  Jonesborough Saturday Market 5/24

Oh boy, it is going to be a fantastic day for the Saturday market.

This week music will be the Blue Ridge Entertainers plus Roy Andrade.

All Nature Sings with Ginny Wall will have your favorite soaps.

Garlic scapes – first taste of garlic in the spring. Cut off the plant to encourage greater bulb growth, they can be used in stir-fries, soups or diced on baked potatoes or pizza. Paired with wild nettles they make a nice spring pesto. Rodney with Salamander Springs Farm will have these along with some Shiitake mushrooms. Yum, sounds delicious!

Dominick’s Garden has finally produced and he will be with us for the first time this season.

We still need more white plastic bags, if you would like to recycle your bags please drop off at the information booth.

See you on the street!

Joyful Noise Acres Farm:  JNA Farm Market is open for ordering.

Good Morning, good morning.
I snuck in a little time on the porch this morning, just to sit and talk to the husband and wake up to this wonderful creation. Hope you can find a moment of quiet today – sometimes we just have to grab it and make it happen, but it is so lovely when it does!

Ok, quiet over, peace remains and we are off…
several of you have mentioned that you didn’t order baked goods from Diabetic Friendly Baking because the quantity was 0 but order anyway. She bakes to order so don’t let that throw you off or stop you from ordering. If she doesn’t have it, she will let you know.
The Almond Flour Pound Cake was incredibly delicious if you are looking for a healthy treat.

*Conscious Cultures *will be adding his products later this morning so be on the lookout. The water kefir and Elderberry kombucha are wonderful. Many of you could not make it out to talk to him but please send him an e-mail if you have any questions. He is a treasure of information.

We are adding two new growers this week and one of them will be here Wednesday from 12-2.* Harvest Table Farm is a mixed vegetable operation run by Meghan Cole. Located in Talking Rock, GA, the farm offers an incredible diversity of vegetables, fruits and herbs, grown without the use of chemical pesticides or herbicides. The other grower is *Harvest Meadows. Nancy Newell specializes in leafy greens and herbs. I have been buying her salad blends for several years and am thrilled to have her on the market. She can grow some lettuce!

We have so many wonderful foods this week so happy shopping and see you Wednesday!
Blessings,
Mary Beth
