Market News
There are several events coming up to tell you about. The first is the regular ACC Commission meeting, this Tuesday at 7pm. As most of you know, it has been illegal to have backyard chickens (even a single hen) within the city limits. A recent citation on a resident went to court, and it was decided that the current prohibition had a number of legal problems. The Commission seems to be on the verge of agreeing that ACC should allow backyard chickens (and other small-scale backyard food production), and the meeting on Tuesday is when they could take that step. An ordinance is on the agenda to get approved that does not have the language that approves chickens, and so the commission could reject that new ordinance and direct the department that wrote it to include the language and re-send it to the commission. A strong showing from Athenians would help that happen, and so you are encouraged to attend the meeting, to speak briefly (if you feel so inclined), or even to just email the commission to let them know you’re in support of small-scale food production in our town.
Second, TEDxManhattan is holding a one-day conference Saturday called “Changing the Way We Eat” where a diverse group of speakers will be talking about issues in the sustainable food and farming movement. While it would be nice to be there in person, Cine and Daily Groceries have teamed up to stream the entire event at Cine, for free. The events begins at 1pm on Saturday, and you can learn all about it here.
Finally, the Southeastern Sustainable Livestock Conference is coming to The Gwinnett Center (6400 Sugarloaf Parkway, Duluth) on 3/28/15 9:00am – 9:00pm. The aim of the conference is to bring together farmers, chefs, and consumers with a mission to promote sustainably produced meat through education, sharing resources, and networking. The day will comprise of seminars and panel discussions, lunch and dinner will be provided with a cash bar & bluegrass band in the evening, and coffee and pastries will be served at registration. The morning keynote speaker is Mary Berry (Executive Director of the Berry Center, KY), & evening keynote speaker is Temple Grandin Prof. of Animal Science at Colorado State University. There is a preview of the agenda on the website (www.southeasternsustainablelivestock.org) and tickets can be purchased at the website also. An additional option tour White Oak Pastures 3/27/15 is available – a coach will be provided from the Gwinnett Center departing at 7:30am. Contact gillian@southeasternsustainablelivestock.org or call 770-634-0175 for more information.
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!
Other Area Farmers Markets
The Athens Farmers Market has closed for the winter. You can watch for news during the offseason on their website. The other area markets are also all closed for the season, I believe. If you know of any winter markets operating, please let me know. And they might all be closed, but we’ll be here all year round!
All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Have you ever just had one of those days where you could not for the life of you say or do the right thing? Such has been the case for me today!

Hope everyone has a great evening, and we’ll see you on Wednesday!
Thanks,
Beverly

The DAWSON LOCAL HARVEST for March 6th
New Arrivals at The Market This Week!
HI EVERYONE!
Hopefully you survived the ordeals of February without too much drama (boy, have I heard some horror stories), and you’re looking forward to a brighter (and warmer!) March. I hope you’re also looking forward to a growing list of Market choices as we progress towards warmer weather.
If you go to the website you will see a new Home Page featuring pictures taken of some of our vendor’s Produce. These are seasonal examples of the ultra-fresh, ultra-yummy locally-grown Produce we have for you every week, plus artisan Breads, Milk, Eggs, and more as we “March” towards Spring. And speaking of new items . . .
HANALEI BATH has added 2 new Aromatherapy Bath Salts and several exciting essential oils (Relieve It Or Knot is one that caught my eye). So take a moment or two and look at The Market to see everything that’s available this week!
THE MARKET IS NOW OPEN!

The Wednesday Market: Sign Up to Help The Wednesday Market
We need your help!
The Wednesday Market volunteers are looking for some helpful hands to facilitate our move into the new location. During the month of March, we will be cleaning, painting, making signs, working on the yard, and eventually – moving! If you would like to help, please let us know on Wednesday. We’ll have a sign up sheet where you can list your name, contact information and area in which you would like to contribute (i.e., cleaning, painting, etc.).
We are EXCITED about our move and hope that our customers and farmers are too! We’ll have more room, more parking, lots of shady trees – and hopefully – more customers and products.
Won’t you consider helping us meet our goals?
Thanks,
Beverly
P.S. I know I told everyone to contact Anna Evans in today’s weblog, but let’s allow her some space. She’s a really busy lady! If you give us your contact info on the sign up sheets, we’ll call you when we’re ready. Thanks.
The Wednesday Market: Order Today and Tomorrow; News about Our New Location
Good afternoon.
The Wednesday Market is open. Please place your orders by 10 p.m. Monday. Orders are ready for pick up between 3 and 6 p.m. Tuesday. Be sure to check the website for all of this week’s product offerings. Here is the link: http://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market
Many of you have asked when The Market is moving. We now know and are happy to announce that we plan to be in our new location in April. We are moving into the little house just past the Pike County school system’s bus garage on Adams Street, not far from our current location. In fact, if you are used to turning down the side street and parking in back of the Board of Education office, you have already found Adams Street! The new location is farther down the street, past the old Zebulon elementary school and The Chandler Building. Look for a little yellow bungalow on the left. If you get to Eastview Cemetery, you have gone too far.
We are using the month of March to spruce up the new location and volunteers are welcome to help us! If you are interested, please contact Anna Evans. In the meantime, you can still find us at the little red brick building at the corner of Concord Street and Adams Street.
See you on Wednesday!

Heirloom Living Market Lilburn: Market News - Thank you for reading!
Bits and Bites
This was the beauty I beheld Thursday morning! Up in the North Georgia Mountains, some snow still remains even after the warmer temperatures and rain of the last few days! Although Wednesday night’s 6 inches of snow brought back fond memories of my childhood in Ohio and the Black Lab found it to his liking, it meant that travel down to Lawrenceville, Lilburn and Buford was not an option!
I am deeply grateful to Marie Wheeler who coordinated the Crossfit/Lawrenceville Market. Marie unselfishly volunteered to take my place when it appeared the weather would preclude me being at Market. Sarah Rockey and Marie Wheeler braved the cold temperatures to allow Market pickup to happen for both Crossfit and Hamilton Mill Members. Our Lilburn Market Coordinator, Kathy Barnes made the trek to the Crossfit/Lawrenceville, also braving the cold temps inside the Market space to accept and check in the Market orders load the items you ordered, drove to Lilburn, unloaded, set-up and ran the Lilburn Market. You all have my un-ending gratitude for your passion and dedication to our Market.
We are a community of people who believe in procuring the best food for ourselves and our families that is fresh, clean, nutrient dense and grown/produced locally. It is not uncommon on Market Day, hearing Members share recipes, discuss products or the latest ‘food news’. The Coordinators, Volunteers and I so enjoy seeing you all and being a part of connecting you with the ‘best of the best’ local Farmers/Producers and Artisans. Please consider joining us as a Volunteer. Is a few hours once a week, biweekly, one a month to much to ask to help your Community? Please contact Maryanne at 404-432-4337 and I will put you in contact with our Volunteer Coordinator, Susan Coker. We need your help – your time!
With the cold weather and the 2 snow events last week, I was busy in the kitchen. I cooked the Chuck Roast I had ordered from Heritage Farm in the Crock Pot with the little Cream Potatoes and Carrots from Burnell Farms an Organic Onion, spices and WOW ~ it was fabulous! Flavorful and great texture! This is a perfect slow cook meal!
Not too long ago, I was discussing Bone Broth with Pat Gibbon a Member of the Crossfit/Lawrenceville Market. I lamented that it seems I am constantly making Bone Broth because I consume it daily but also want enough to use in soups or use in other recipes. Being a fellow Bone Broth Warrior, Pat explained that she uses her large electric roaster to make her broth. Hmmmm, I have one of those that sits on the shelf, only pulled out once or twice a year to roast the holiday Turkey! Now, instead of ending up with a quart or two of Bone Broth, I am rewarded with a couple of gallons! What a great idea you shared Miss Pat and I certainly am enjoying the fruits of your wisdom! Thank you!
This past week, I tried a new combination consisting of Alpaca Bones, a few Water Buffalo Bones, Lamb Necks Bones and Beef Soup Bones and the result was a wonderful, rich and complex Bone Broth! The meat was picked from the Bones and the remainder of the Chuck Roast added with Carrots, Potatoes, Onions, Brussell Sprouts, Cabbage, Peas, Tomatoes, Green Beans and a little Kale plus some spices and I created a hearty Veggie Soup! Every item in the soup were items purchased through the Market. Some were fresh and some were from the freezer, put up from last year’s Harvest! What is your latest creation?
Specials, New Items, Updates
Although Lamb was a staple of my family’s diet, it was tradition in our home to have a roasted Leg of Lamb on Easter. Greg of Heritage Farm has Leg of Lamb on special this week and I want to take advantage of this sale since Easter is April 5th! He also had the Rib Steak and Minced (Ground) Lamb offered on sale this week!
Greg has also added a Bulk Pack – Organ Feet and Bones consisting of Soup Bones, Pig Feet, Lamb Bones, Fat Back, Chicken Necks and Backs, Turkey Necks, Ham Hocks, Organ Meat. This is 20#‘s of various items for $30.00!! This is a phenomenal deal and if you make your own Pet Food, it is a fabulous find. Needless to say, I got one Bulk Pack for the Black Lab! The offering is limited in number and in frequency of availability! So, grab it now if you want it! You will not be disappointed!
The freezer at Crossfit/Lawrenceville Market still has several packages of frozen Yellow Squash, which Farmer Ricky Brown of Back River Farm put up after the harvest this summer. Perfect to add to soups or casseroles. Please email me if you would like a package to be included with your order this week. Email order for Yellow Squash
Burnell Farms is going strong bringing us some great winter veggies! Broccoli, Brussell Sprouts, Huge heads of Savoy Cabbage, Carrots, yummy Cauliflower, Kale and Romaine Lettuce are all listed in their offerings this week. Tammy just added Young Spinach. I’m in…
I spoke with Doug Ruling of Doug’s Garden yesterday and although he lost his Winter Crops this year, his seedlings for late Winter, Spring and early Summer Crops are growing profusely in his green house. His offerings will be back with us before you know it! Doug is creating some surprises in his offerings for early Spring – look for hints in the next couple of weeks! I think you will be pleasantly surprised!
The Veggie Patch lost power in their green houses in the first snow/ice event a couple of weeks ago. Some items made it through and are listed in their offerings. Andrew and crew are working hard, harvesting and planting! Did you know The Veggie Patch also has other offerings? Check our their Herbs (medicinal and culinary), Pickles, Sauces and Juices and Bloody Mary Mix!
Carrell Farms has delicious Water Buffalo and they have recently added Alpaca to their offerings. This week at all Markets, there will be samples of Alpaca Sausages! Cranberry-Sage and Basil-Sun Dried Tomato sound like intriguing combinations and something that must be tried!
Between Marie of Bakery on Brooks, our Gluten Free Master Baker and Dabrielle of My Daily Bread, our Whole Grains Master Baker, we can all enjoy fresh, organic, local Baked Goods. From Breads to Paleo Treats, Cookies to Cornbread these creative and talented ladies can supply us with nutritious products for our families.
Markets close at 8:00pm Monday. Please remember that minimums must be met for each Market to ensure delivery by our Farmers! Be sure and get your order in and thank you for supporting our LOCAL Farmers!
