ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market is Open and Last Week to Apply to Work For Us!

Good Morning Market,

Could it be? Have we truly emerged from this last hurrah of winter yet? Fingers crossed for all of us, especially our farmers, who have worked so hard to keep the market bountiful all year-round.

I’ve got some exciting news about our donation program. Our House, an incredible local center for the working homeless that provides education and workforce training, children’s and housing programs, and SO much more, recently expressed a need for donated eggs to make their breakfast program more nutritious. We reached out to our growers and Crescent Creek Farm answered the call. You can now purchase their pasture-raised eggs for donation, which basically means that you can purchase eggs that will not only support an awesome local farm, but will improve the diet of those that can’t afford such wonderful food.

And a friendly reminder that this is the last week to apply for our part-time Program and Market Manager position. We’re looking for motivated folks that are passionate about sustainable agriculture to manage our programs, communicate with our stakeholders, and contribute to the sustainability and growth of our mission. Check out this link to read the full job description. Interested candidates should send a cover letter, resume, and contact information for two professional references to arlocalfoodnetwork@gmail.com by Sunday, March 15th. Contact Alex at arlocalfoodnetwork@gmail.com or 501.291.2769 if you have any questions. Please share with your networks to make sure we reach all the best candidates!

Stay…Warm?!?!

Market News

Spring Forward! Did you remember to move your clocks forward overnight? This means Spring cannot be too far away. Hopefully the icy weather we have experienced the last three weeks is behind us.

SPECIAL NOTE: I want to remind everyone we will be closed next week. Be sure to stock up on items you might need for that period.

Other news from the Market:

We have a new vendor join us this week. It is Alfresco Pasta. He has been a regular at the Market on the Square and is now available here. Today, he lists two difference varieties of ravioli, but more of his products will be added soon.

We welcome back Farmer Brown this week too. After a long break, he has several of his hydroponic lettuces available again.

Rocky Glade Farm is starting to expand their listing. In addition to radishes, they have added their hakurei turnips.

A note from Chef Jenny:

With spring right around the corner it’s time to heat things! NEW this week from the Seeds of Success is a Sweet & SPICY Mix. It’s a wildly delicious snack that combines heat with a little bit of sweet. A combination of sunflower, pumpkin, and cumin seeds are mixed chili pepper seasonings and coated with honey to create a snack with a kick!

There are plenty of other products available this week. Browse the categories to see what your will find.

Thanks so much for your support of Stones River Market, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. We’ll see you on Wednesday at Southern Stained Glass at 310 West Main Street from 5:00 to 6: 30 pm!

Farm to Table Recipes

SAUSAGE, KALE & LENTIL SOUP
Ingredients
2 tablespoons EVOO, plus more for drizzling
1 pound hot or sweet Italian sausage, casings removed
4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 fresh bay leaves
2 stems fresh rosemary
1 carrot, finely chopped
1 large or 2 medium onions, chopped
1 potato, peeled and cut into small dice
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 bunch black kale, stemmed and chopped
A few gratings fresh nutmeg
1/2 cup dry white or red wine
6 cups chicken stock
1 1/4 cups brown lentils
Shaved Pecorino cheese, for serving
Directions
Heat the EVOO in a soup pot over medium-high heat. Add the sausage and cook, crumbling with a wooden spoon, until browned. Add the garlic, bay leaves, rosemary, carrots, onions and potatoes and season with salt and pepper. Cook until the vegetables are soft, 7 to 8 minutes. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute. Stir in the kale and nutmeg. Add the wine to deglaze the pot, stirring and scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. Stir in the chicken stock and 2 cups water and bring to boil (for thicker soup, use 2 cups less liquid).

Stir in the lentils and cook at a low, bubbly simmer until the lentils are tender, 30 to 35 minutes. Remove the rosemary stems and bay leaves.

Ladle the soup into bowls and top with a drizzle of EVOO and the shaved Pecorino.
