Chef’s Corner

Mexibowls, my name for a dish of rice and beans, are an inexpensive and satisfying meal. The combination of whole grains with legumes creates a perfect amino acid profile, creating a protein rich, blood sugar stabilizing, nutritious addition to your meal. I like to add all kinds of veggies and sometimes cheese to a pile of brown rice and beans del dia. Salsa, guacamole, shredded greens, sauteed nopales, pickled carrots or peppers…the combinations are endless and changing it up with the seasons keeps the palate excited! This week I topped black beans and brown rice with Dandelion’s whirled peas, a lettuce mix of Kissimmee’s kale and tangy lettuce (aka mizuna) with Jim’s mitsuba, Wildflower’s Persian lime, chevre and tomato salsa. I made my mexibowl in the morning to take with me for lunch and it was perfect at room temperature. Cooking the rice and beans in the morning takes less effort than you think. The cooking time isn’t interactive, so its quite easy to put them on the stove, set a timer and let it cook while you are getting ready for the day. Soaking the beans overnight will cut down on the cooking time. A soaked cup of black beans for 10-12 hours in the refrigerator will be ready in 30 minutes and brown rice in 40 minutes.

Buen Appetito!
Chef Amy

New Field Farm's Online Market:  Order deadline confusion?

Hi,
A couple of people who ordered today, Thursday, thought their order might be late.

I apologize for any confusion. When my foot was in bad shape I was encouraging everyone to order by Wednesday night to allow for my slower pace. The official deadline for ordering was still Thursday night by 8:00.

My foot is much better, and while it can be helpful to get orders on the early side in any case, ordering by Thursday evening at 8:00 is completely fine.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Thanks,
Tim

CSA Farmers Market:  GROWING Season Update Sept 3, 2015

Winter Squash Harvest Time, Law Family Farm is harvesting their winter squash. Koleine Law says it has been a totally uneventful year for growing. They did not have to battle squash bug, powdery mildew, squash vine borers or cucumber beetles. They will be having a total of five varieties this week on the website, butternut, delicata, spaghetti, carnival and buttercup. The picture above is some squash that was sold this week. Tasty Yummy Winter Squash, cooked in the oven is the perfect thing to have to warm you up as the weather cools down.

APPLES FOR THIS WEEK. Almar’s are now picking Ginger Gold apples and they have a lot of Paula Red apples available. Fresh cider should be coming soon, the only hiccup is that the cider press is not working properly. As soon as they expert repairmen arrives they will be pressing fresh cider again. They have won awards in the past for their cider. They like to mix a variety of apples that include tart and sweet to acquire excellent flavor. Into the year as the apple changes the flavor slightly changes.

John Simmons from Farm-boy Flapjacks has introduced a new flavor of chips made to his specifications from his very own open pollinated certified organic corn that he grew. The chips are in a seal-able zip lock back. To top it all off he offers a money back guarantee on any bag that is stale. Which is pretty phenomenal considering the high humidity we have in this state. Remember they do not contain any preservatives. How cool is that.

Superior Seasons:  Sweet corn, cucumbers, garlic, onions, burgers,...

Old99Farm Market:  Harperman going viral

avaaz is doing a campaign to get the cdn federal scientist who wrote a protest song about Stephen Harper reinstated… he lost his job because he wrote and performed this song…

Here’s what avaaz has to say.

Dear friends,

Tony Turner wrote a political protest song about Stephen Harper – and now he’s been put on leave and is being investigated by the government!

They want to silence free speech and stop the song, “Harperman”, from reaching a bigger audience…but it’s about to backfire big time. Because if everyone receiving this email watches the video at the link below, it will be seen by 3% of Canada – if we all share it with just one other person, 6% of Canada, and so on.

Let’s make this viral and timely video a political nightmare for a government try! ing to silence critics. Click now and help make this huge by signing a petition demanding Tony be reinstated immediately – then watch the video and help “Harperman” take-off across the country by sharing on Facebook, and everywhere else:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/harperman_loc/?tTavWbb

Tony Turner is a popular folk singer, and also a scientist at Environment Canada. When a recording of his “Harperman” political protest song — calling on the country to get rid of the Harper government – was posted on Youtube, he was suspended and put under investigation.

Environment Canada says that all employees agree to comply with a value and ethics code that lays out expected behaviour – but the Supreme Court has said that public service workers have a right to free expression — just like the rest of us.

Our government has consistently muzzled scientists and public servants whose opinions or research could threaten their policies. And we’ve seen how it views protest, passing Bill C-51 that labels environmental activists as “security threats”.

Fortunately, they can’t silence the internet. Click now to stand with Tony and watch the video – then share it around the country:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/harperman_loc/?tTavWbb

It’s our right to protest, and we shouldn’t be punished for it. Let’s turn this story and “Harperman” into a political nightmare as election season comes into full swing.

Champaign, OH:  Market Information for Vendors and Customers!

Just a quick note to let you know that just like every other year, at this time, the YMCA is on shut down for general maintenance, housekeeping, etc…

Like always, this does not hinder our market, in any way, at all. You will still enter through the front door, the front desk will be ready to take your payments, and we will be in the usual location.

Thanks so much!!
