Market News

I love reading the weblog from sister markets. This one comes from our sister market, northeastgeorgia.locallygrown.net. I encourage you to check them out if you’re in the Hall or Habersham area.

Those who have been a part of local food scenes for some time may have experience with a random box of goodies… and are probably better off for it. Some do really well with opening a big box of produce, getting ideas for meals from the item of most abundance, and highlighting the seasonal ingredient. Some find that idea terrifying and need a recipe along with a cooking mentor. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) was, and still is, a great business model for small farmers not relying on subsides and loans. The goal is to support the farmer with a financial commitment before the produce is harvested! This typically takes the form of a subscription to a single farm but happens in all forms and fashions. It’s a way to say “I support what you do, and I will pay you upfront for your commitment to growing food.” Some CSA’s encourage you to volunteer on the farm, some allow to you to pick items from their market stand, while others have a weekly box ready for pickup on their farm. The key component is that the community is consistently supporting the farmer throughout the year. This is also one of the goals behind Northeast Georgia Locally Grown. This is a year ‘round market so you continue to get fresh food and farmers continue to have a source of income. We have many farmers that grow produce for only the summer months, some that use the winter to regenerate healthy soil, and some able to extend their production into the winter months. Some growers even prefer the colder months due to less pests and extended life cycles!

Regardless, I am excited to see what will make its way to the market throughout the year! Every season, subtle changes happen as individual growers take different approaches based on their resources, past experiences, and customer feedback.

This market combines elements of CSAs, Farmers Markets, and Food Hubs. We are not having an identity crisis, but rather one of the puzzle pieces in rebuilding food systems based off of the demand for fresh, local, and sustainable foods. It is pretty amazing to be able to support farmers throughout the year, and it wouldn’t be possible without YOU!

Thanks Andrew! Market Manager for Northeast Georgia Locally Grown in Gainesville.

UPDATE CONTACT With all the hustle and bustle of back-to-school and new routines, it’s easy to forget things like picking up your TCH order. Remember that we can’t keep your items past 12pm, and we’ll try contacting you any way we know how to make sure you get what you ordered. Now’s a great time to check the phone number on your account to make sure it’s a number I can reach you at 11:45am on a Saturday. I start calling everyone who hasn’t picked up yet then, and will keep trying to reach you until 12pm, when we have to pack it all up. I hate seeing people’s food go somewhere else, and having a good phone number on your account is the best way to keep that from happening.

DELIVERY We are postponing Vickery pick up and delivery in September.

Main Market Location and Pick Up

ALFN Local Food Club:  Market Reminder

The past drives us into the inevitable future while we live somewhere in the middle. In all honesty, the present doesn’t exist. Try to identify this present moment, and it will have already slide into the past. We hydroplane up into our future. Farmers live on this glassy edge too. The romaine leaf stands up, robust, alive with chloroplast pumping. The knife’s edge pauses at the stem before plant becomes salad and death cascades a series of effects. Bags are arranged, cold rooms can stretch the present, but ultimately, we quickly arrange the bodies of plants and animals on tables so that our bodies may continue before the present moment escapes us. Life bleeds into life. Here’s to the bodies of others who nurture our own bodies.

Click, order, and be joyful for tomorrow the market closes.

Sincerely,

Kyle Holton

New Field Farm's Online Market:  Happy Autmnal Equinox

Greetings,

Cool nights and mild days – a nice stretch of weather. But dry, so irrigating continues, even this late in the season.

We can offer some lettuce, but it’s still limited as we get into the first of the last three plantings.

Field tomatoes are just about over, with still some here and there.

There are plenty of potatoes, except for Purple Majesty which are just about gone. Also lots of carrots, beets, leeks, onions, garlic, peppers, scallions, chard, bok choy, spinach, kale, parsley, and lettuce (to come).

Thank you for your orders and happy autumn.

Tim

Champaign, OH:  Feed Your Head

Why reserve a day (or even a few hours) for meal prep?
•You’ll save time cooking throughout the week…
•You’ll have a healthy meal waiting for you when you’re experiencing fatigue or have an especially busy schedule….
•You won’t need to worry about stopping at the grocery store after work….
•You won’t need to worry about what you’re going to make for dinner – its already done!…
•You’ll save money by planning out meals and grocery purchases ahead of time….
•You’ll be more likely to reach your health goals (weight loss, muscle building, weight gain, etc.)…

One more note of love from your market manager…

I am, right at this moment, in my kitchen, with trays of local tomatoes all slow roasting in my ovens. Later, I will begin to sauté the rest of the ingredients for a few things this week.

Tomorrow, is the kick off for Cosmic Soup Season, at The Depot Coffeehouse. We rock the sandwiches and the soups in there!! The Depot has been my home away from home from the beginning of Cosmic Charlie. My breads are used for their sandwiches, and now, everyone gets excited for soup season!

Also, this weekend hosts another fun filled, great time of a local event…The Simon Kenton Chili Cook Off!!

Once again, I will be set up as a vendor with Oakview Farm Meats as we rock locally produced sandwiches, my breads, each of us sell chili, AND, you can even get a combo of Cosmic/Oakview chili!! It’s great fun, it’s an annual local event, and for many of us, it marks the end to a very long summer of multiple vending at various farmers markets, and festivals. Not all markets close down, but I am speaking from my markets…except for this year round lovely market.

ANYWAY…this time of year is when I turn back to the days when I was running my daughter to every activity, working a cool little part time gig, and making sure that when we arrived home, each evening, there was something healthy to pull out for dinner.

This is where I learned to make certain things, in larger batches, when items are in season, and then having them on hand for quick grab and go, give me a glass of wine, dinners…stress free, cost friendly, and super nutrition packed!

Back then, I wish this market had been in existence. I would have breezed through, placed my order, been able to race in, grab my order, feel good about shopping local, feel good about the cost friendly prices, AND, loaded up my pantry, fridge, and freezer, for quick, at home dinners…

Think about that as you get ready to place your orders before we close, this evening!

Right now, the trays of slow roasted tomatoes will come out of the oven, cool, go into containers for my fridge, and be ready to add to my Cosmic Soup of the Week, at The Depot, AND be ready when I am making Cosmic Veggie Chili to serve at this weekend’s event.

Do yourself a favor, show yourself some love, and do the planning/ordering/cooking to feed your head…

The market will close at 10pm, this evening…don’t be left with fast food options at the end of your busy evenings. Shop with us…let us be part of your evening dinner plans…

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…

Martin's Farmstand:  Good raw honey

Hello, The market page at martinsfarmstand is open for orders. The selection is rapidly shifting from summer things to fall crops. The storage onions are dry now and we are mostly finished hauling large amounts squash in from the fields. We have raw honey here at the stand again.
We plan to have the stand open this fall with normal hours until sometime in mid November. After that we will still be open into the winter with informal hours- If we are around we will give you service. We also have a wonderful lot of really good watermelons right now. Andrew just hauled in three loads with the van. Daniel
