Tidbits

Be sure and check out the Weekly Specials from Heritage Farm! This week Greg is offering:

New York Strip Steak
Rib Steak (bone in)
Beef Soup Bones
Cut-up Chicken
Apples
Boston Butt Roast (large)

Morris of Healing Earth Farms is back and is offering:

Muscadine Grapes (Bronze and Purple), Honey, Medicinal Sale, Blue Lake and Contender Green Beans, Okra, Black-eyed Peas,Sweet Banana Peppers, Jalapeno Peppers and Sweet Potatoes.

Muscadines make wonderful Jam or Jelly! They are a type of Grape that grow well here in the state of Georgia! Although they are “thick skinned” and have seeds, they are wonderful to munch on but my favorite way to eat them is Muscadine Jam!

Vicky Fry of Fry Farm is offering: Edible Hibiscus Flowers, Arugula, 4 varieties of Eggplant, Popcorn and Hakurie Turnips (with or without tops)!

Kathy Barnes of So-Koi is back from vacation! Be sure and check out all of Kathy’s offerings from her beautiful Hand-crafted Aprons, Produce Bags, Lanyards, Checkbook Covers to her growing inventory of Organic Seasonings and Spices! In addition to providing items to our Market, Kathy coordinates the Lilburn Market (with the help of her husband Keb).
Kathy and Keb were on vacation last week so I had the opportunity to coordinate the Market along with Susan Coker, Sue Martinson and Genie Wallace and her son! (Bruce Wallace helped pack up at the end of Market!) I was happy to see some familiar faces and meet some of our newest Members. In addition, it warmed my heart to hear such great compliments about Kathy and her helpers! Words cannot quite convey my gratitude for your enthusiasm, dedication, tireless efforts and passion in coordinating the many facets of the Market! I couldn’t do it without you!

Don’t forget your Bakery items from My Daily Bread! Breads, Sweet Breads, Cinnamon Rolls, Cookies, Gluten Free Brownies and Gluten Free Cheesecake Brownies! Yum! In addition, Dabrielle also offers Veggie Dips and a to-die-for Hot Pepper Cheese Log!

Joyful Noise Acres Farm:  Don't forget to place your orders before 8:00pm.

The market closes at 8 so get those orders in. Beautiful fall vegetables, lots of fresh milk, fresh cheeses, delicious meats, plenty of bones for broth, delicious, guilt free pastries and breads, and a few guilt laden ones.
Thank you for supporting our local farmers and artisans.
See you Wednesday,

Princeton Farm Fresh:  The Market is Open

I am so excited that the leaves on the trees are starting to change. This is my favorite season. Hannah and I bought apples this weekend from the Amish and we are planning to can apple butter, applesauce and to freeze apple pie filling for the holidays. I love the art of preserving food. We have a huge stockpile of pickles to make us through the winter.
If anyone knows of someone with extra apples this year I would love to talk to them about posting apples here on our website. It may be a good way to add a few dollars to their pockets for Christmas.
I look forward to seeing everyone on Friday,
Angela

Conyers Locally Grown:  Available for Friday October 2

I hope this finds you all doing well. The market is open and ready for orders. As the season changes so does our veggie selections. We have a few sweet potatoes, arugula and soon will be adding kale, collards, lettuce and more.

We will see you on Friday between 5-7 at Copy Central.

Thank you,
Brady

Market News

This cool misty rain might have kept us from seeing the beautiful lunar eclipse tonight, but it’s been great for all the leafy greens growing in the fields. There’s a chance we might hit 80 degrees once this coming week, so maybe the cooler days are here to stay for a while. I for one couldn’t be happier!

I don’t have anything in my notes for this week for the newsletter, so I guess I’ll just post these few sentences and let you get right to ordering. There is plenty to choose from!

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and their farm stand is open Tuesday afternoons. They have a website too. A new Athens Sunday market has opened up at the Classic Center, every Sunday from 11 to 4 now through October. They have a website here: http://www.sundaycentermarket.com. The Comer Farmers Market is open in downtown Comer on Saturday mornings. The Oconee County farmers market is open Saturday mornings in front of the Oconee County Courthouse in Watkinsville. The Shields Ethridge Cultivator Market is held monthly in Jefferson. If you know of any markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Searcy, AR:  Fall vegetables

For your convenience the Searcy Farmers Market online ordering system is open for orders. Please place orders by 10 pm on Monday night. Orders will be available for pick up on Tuesday between 4 and 5:30 pm on the corner of the courthouse square beside the farmers market sign. Thank you for supporting your local farmers.
