There are lots of NEW products for real good eating and sharing.

It’s really important to buy local food first! I personally get most of my weekly groceries here. ( And I grow a lot of my own food as well). It’s so satisfying knowing that my dollars went into a farmers hands than into corporate entities.

Farm Tours are scheduled soon. A lot of our farms here are participating in the CFSA coming in June. More details later. CAFE is planning a tour of farms as well. So there will be plenty of opportunity to visit any farm you want!

Plus, most farmers allow a stop in visit. May even put you to work. ( I know I would!)!

Take care of your moms, buy local food and craft , and Eat Well!

Wow, another week with 700 products listed! Right around the corner will be berries and summer squash too. Thanks Growers! There are several listings for bulk amounts so you can preserve the goodness by canning, freezing, or dehydrating. Enjoy the goodness!

SPECIAL NOTE: Backyard Gourmet, sponsored by the Library and La Lucha Space is on May 17 from 5-8 PM. This year we have a grant from the Department of Arkansas Heritage to celebrate Heritage Month with the theme: “Come to the table: Celebrating the flavors of Arkansas”. Our event is called “Beans, Greens and Cornbread” and we are inviting everyone to come to the library to celebrate our local food traditions with this free meal. This is also a dessert potluck, so bring a dessert to share!

We’ll have live music from Joe and Jeff, High Lonesome, and the Arkansas Country Dance Society. There will be a mini-seed swap and some seed saving demonstrations, plus winning photos from our photography contest.

Lots of great produce coming to the market every Friday. Come early for the best selection from the EXTRAS table.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our mothers out there. We appreciate everything you do especially feeding your family locally grown and made products.

There are several items of interest for the Market this week. Meadow Branch Beef is on vacation. Wedge Oak Farm has re-stocked their offerings of pork and chicken. With the weather warming up, there is an abundance of fresh produce this week including several varieties of kale and lettuce.

The marvelous weather and hens growing up nicely have left Rock Hill Road Farm with extra Junior sized eggs. RJ is running a sale on young pullet eggs for $3.00 per dozen.

Still more plants for your garden are being added. These include cucumbers, potatoes and peppers from Rainbow Hill Farm and White City Produce and Greenhouse.

Many of you were able to enjoy strawberries from Rocky Glade Farm last week. They have once again made them available to order. They will go quickly though.

There are plenty of other products available this week. Browse the categories to see what your will find.

Recipes

Please, share your recipes with us on the Recipes tab. We’d all love to know how you use your Stones River Market products, so we can try it too! There is an abundance of springs onions on the Market this week, so we are featuring a reciping using them from Yummly and Kalyn’s Kitchen.

Val’s Sweet Cabbage Slaw with Green Onion and Parsley
(Makes 4-6 servings, recipe from my sister Val.)

Ingredients:
1/2 large head green cabbage (about 6 cups coarsely chopped cabbage)
3/4 cup chopped parsley (or more, you can use curly or flat parsley)
3/4 cup thinly sliced green onion (or more)
1/4 cup canola oil
1/4 cup white balsamic vinegar or white vinegar
1/2 cup sugar or Splenda (use Splenda for South Beach Diet)
salt to taste (I used about 3/4 tsp. sea salt)
freshly ground black pepper to taste (I used about 1/4 tsp.)

Instructions:
Cut out core from cabbage, then thinly slice and coarsely chop slices until you have about 6 cups chopped cabbage. Wash and coarsely chop parsley, and thinly slice green onions.

In small bowl or glass measuring cup, stir together the canola oil, white balsamic vinegar or white vinegar, sugar or Splenda, salt, and pepper.

Put chopped cabbage, chopped parsley, and sliced green onions into salad bowl and toss to combine. Add just enough dressing to moisten salad, and toss again. (You may not need all the dressing.) Taste to see if you want more salt or pepper, then serve.

This will keep for a day or so in the fridge, although I think it’s better freshly made when the cabbage has more crunch.

As I write this, my husband is patiently waiting to take me shopping for bags of dirt. Two girlfriends spent their vacation here the past few days: we bought five shopping carts of plants at Grower’s Outlet, and I scored many large pots at estate sales so I can spend the day planting goodies in my new container garden. Yeah!!!!

ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market is Open!


Good Sunday, Foodies,

And a happy Mother’s Day to all of the wonderful mamas in our lives. Personally, I owe just about everything to my mom, and though I could never thank her enough, a brunch full of local food at The Root is not a bad place to start. Thanks so much to all of our mothers for instilling a love of good food and community in supporting small, diversified farms like the ones in our market. Speaking of good food, in the market this week…

  • I’m so excited that my pork: farmer’s choice bundle from Farm Girl Meats arrived this week. This is an incredible deal for a variety of cuts from their animal welfare approved, woodland raised hogs, and thanks to Farm Girl, we’ll be having pork for weeks to come!
  • We’re so lucky to have artisan breads from Bryant-based bakery Arkansas Fresh. Their Arkansas sourdough, birdseed multigrain, ciabatta, and honey flax seed sourdough are all absolutely gourmet, and make sure to check out the extras list at Food Club pick-up to seek out some of their even more creative loaves.
  • Enjoy some Skyphos red lettuce from the ALFN-sponsored Victory Garden Project. This beautiful dark red butterhead has a velvety texture and sweet taste. Expect to see many more great things in the near future from the Victory Garden, as they just received $500 from the ALFN Community Fund to complete their ongoing hoophouse project!
  • Nabak kimchi from Garden Works. Kimchi is a tasty, fermented condiment similar to sauerkraut loaded with healthy, alive bacteria that’s good for your gut, and I’m super excited to try Garden Works’ take on it.
  • Order some custom embroidery from Bluebird Hill Berry Farm. Those talented folks can place names, pictures, or symbols of your choice on just about anything!

Thanks to the Arkansas Times for their coverage of our Green Groceries fresh, local food pantry program. Through a partnership with our wonderful hosts at Christ Episcopal Church, Green Groceries gets low-income families healthy, fresh food from all local growers, providing much-needed nutrition and support to small farmers. You can support many of these same families and farmers by adding donation greens to your cart in the market. Thanks to Christ Episcopal and to our local farmers for supporting this really wonderful and unique program.

Farmer Updates



Miss Vicky of Fry Farm is back at the Lilburn Market! After set backs with winter crops (weather took a terrible toll), Vicky and Steve pushed through it and have some great produce to offer this week: Green Onions, Leeks, Lettuce Mix, Romaine Lettuce, Cherry Belle Radishes and French Breakfast Radishes. Welcome back Fry Farm!

Tammy of Burnell Farms does not have any items available this week but will return to Market next week!

The Veggie Patch is providing a good selection of wonderful fresh Spring veggie offerings and have fresh Herbs listed as well! Arugula, Bunching Onions, 4 types of Kale or a Mix, Green Lettuce, Red Lettuce, Mizuna, 2 kinds of HOT Peppers, Salad Mix and Swiss Chard. In addition, they offer cuttings if Herbs: German Thyme, Rosemary, 2 types of Parsley, Oregano, Chives and Medicinal Herbs: Marjoram, Lavender and Chamomile. The Heirloom Seedlings, (both Herb and Veggie) that I received are all doing well! Andrew and his crew certainly got them off to a banner start — now if I can just keep them healthy!

Doug of Doug’s Garden 2 types of Veggie Boxes available on the all Markets this week. Both contain a plethora of Veggies and the Herb Box has an added bag of freshly harvested Herbs! (lots of herbs!) In addition, he has added 1# bags of Spring Mix Lettuce, Young Spinach and Spicy Lettuce Mix! Lilburn folks were fortunate to see his huge Kohlrabi (alien looking root veggie) and a few were ‘brave enough’ to purchase! Please be sure and pick up Recipes at Market! Kohlrabi is very versatile — peeled and shredded along with a Granny Smith Apple makes an outstanding Cole Slaw! Depending on what is ready for Harvest this coming week, Doug will have additional items on the Farmers’ Sales Table.

High Garden Center formerly Cedar Seeder! Yes, finally George has gotten the new green house at their new property up and running and his plantings are yielding results! He had quite a undertaking to get the new place cleared and ready for planting and now Sunflowers, Broccoli, Wheat Grass, Kale SPROUTS are ready for us to eat! Also called Microgreens or Micros – no matter your preference of names, these are little but mighty powerhouses of nutrient dense food! These are plants and come in pots that fit into the Cedar Planters hand made by George. (You can purchase the planters on the Market also!) Either way – put them in your kitchen window and add to salads, smoothies or juices! It’s Spring; time to detox and renew! Welcome back Krista and George!

Be sure and check out the wonderful meat selections available from B&G Farms. Lynda has Necks and Backs on sale; perfect to add to those chicken carcasses you have been saving to make Bone Broth. I have some ‘brewing’ as I write this!

Joyful Noise Acres Farm has a few items on the Market this week and will be adding more in the near future!

Carrell Farms will be re-listing their items in early June when David returns from his Alpaca Shearing. He travels during the Spring in the Southeast and Shalley must care for the Farm. Unfortunately, she has no help at this time and cannot leave the Farm for deliveries. David and Shalley also raise Alpacas so between the Water Buffalo, the Alpacas, the Aviary and the fact that it is Spring and there are LOTS of new babies, she is one busy lady!

Both Golden Farms and Rocky Acres offer fresh eggs from pastured chickens fed organic, soy and GMO free feed.

Linda has just returned from England; however, she is scheduled to have surgery on her shoulder (which was injured when she was thrown from a horse). I will let you know when it becomes available.

There is a limited supply of Salmon Filets and Halibut from Doug’s Wild Alaska Salmon. Their Halibut and Salmon Wild Caught of the Alaska coast by Doug and his Family. The quality and taste are phenomenal!

My Daily Bread supply us with fresh, organic baked goods that are yummy! Be sure and check out Dabrielle’s offerings this week. For those of you who are Gluten Free, Dabrielle does offer Brownies and Sugar Cookies. Her Spelt Bread and Spelt Pumpkin Muffins are also good choices for those who cannot have wheat. Although Spelt does contain Gluten, it can be eaten by some folks who have a slight gluten intolerance! We never know what will be brought for the Farmers’ Sale Table, so be sure and place an order for what you want so you are not disappointed.

Marie of Bakery on Brooks is back in full swing with her her Gluten Free and Paleo goodies! She is a creative Baker (read Mad Scientist in the Kitchen) and has found the secret of Gluten Free goodies. Her Paleo Bites are fabulous – don’t know how she does it – but they are small and mighty bites of heaven! Try any of the varieties. I will stick with the Almond Joy thank you very much!

Cara of Golden Farms has Duck Eggs available! Get your order in early because there is a limited supply!

The 4 Pack of Honey from Dances With Bees has been a great seller of late! Everyone is wanted to find their favorite! Be sure and check out Jay’s Honey varieties! Have you seen the Blackberry Mead Vinegar Jay has listed in his offerings! WOW! It makes a great salad dressing! I also tried reducing it and used it as a glaze for Lamb Chops! Oh, yes, it was a winner!

Patti makes some outstanding Natural Body Products from the honey and beeswax. Her Gardener’s Friend Soap is fantastic!

Bo and Megan of My Quality Mushrooms had a very busy and productive Winter making many improvements to their Farm! They are concentrating their efforts on serving the restaurant community; however, I am talking with them about purchasing on a monthly basis. Please let me know if you are interested – we would have to have a minimum order.

STRAWBERRIES


Watsonia Farms Strawberries Arrived this past week! Mine were fabulous and besides just popping them in my mouth, they found their way into some Strawberry Gummies! Organic Strawberries will be available in quarts or gallons through the season – which doesn’t last long, so be sure and get yours soon!

Remember, these are ORGANIC Strawberries. They have not been sprayed with pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. They may not be ‘perfectly shaped’ but they will be fresh and flavorful! Pay attention now — this is important. Here is a hint – when you get your berries home, soak them in a solution of Vinegar and Water 1 part Vinegar to 3 parts Water (preferably filtered water or spring water). I use Apple Cider Vinegar (Bragg’s) however, white vinegar will work also. Soak those little red juicy globes of strawberry goodness for about a half hour; swish the water around when you think about it. The soak will remove any spores that may be present on the berries and will prolong the life of them greatly. After the soak, rinse well. I spin my berries dry (salad spinner) and then put in a glass container lined with a paper towel. I do not put the lid on tightly so that moisture does not accumulate and there is air flow! My berries keep til I finish the last one ~ sometimes up to 5 days later! Try it, it really does work! (Thanks Mom!)

Doug of Doug’s Garden 2 types of Veggie Boxes available on the all Markets this week. Both contain a plethora of Veggies and the Herb Box has an added bag of freshly harvested Herbs! (lots of herbs!) In addition, he has added 1# bags of Spring Mix Lettuce, Young Spinach and Spicy Lettuce Mix! Lilburn folks were fortunate to see his huge Kohlrabi (alien looking root veggie) and a few were ‘brave enough’ to purchase! Please be sure and pick up Recipes at Market and check out this great veggie! Kohlrabi is very versatile — peeled and shredded along with a Granny Smith Apple makes an outstanding Cole Slaw! Depending on what is ready for Harvest this coming week, Doug will have additional items on the Farmers’ Sales Table.

High Garden Center formerly Cedar Seeder! Yes, finally George has gotten the new green house at their new property up and running and his plantings are yielding results! He had quite a undertaking to get the new place cleared and ready for planting and now Sunflowers, Broccoli, Wheat Grass, Kale SPROUTS are ready for us to eat! Also called Microgreens or Micros – no matter your preference of names, these are little but mighty powerhouses of nutrient dense food! These are plants and come in pots that fit into the Cedar Planters hand made by George. (You can purchase the planters on the Market also!) Either way – put them in your kitchen window and add to salads, smoothies or juices! It’s Spring; time to detox and renew! Welcome back Krista and George!

Be sure and check out the wonderful meat selections available from B&G Farms. Lynda has Necks and Backs on sale; perfect to add to those chicken carcasses you have been saving to make Bone Broth. I have some ‘brewing’ as I write this!

Joyful Noise Acres Farm has a few items on the Market this week and will be adding more in the near future!

Carrell Farms will be re-listing their items in early June when David returns from his Alpaca Shearing. He travels during the Spring in the Southeast and Shalley must care for the Farm. Unfortunately, she has no help at this time and cannot leave the Farm for deliveries. David and Shalley also raise Alpacas so between the Water Buffalo, the Alpacas, the Aviary and the fact that it is Spring and there are LOTS of new babies, she is one busy lady!

Both Golden Farms and Rocky Acres offer fresh eggs from pastured chickens fed organic, soy and GMO free feed.

Linda has just returned from England; however, she is scheduled to have surgery on her shoulder (which was injured when she was thrown from a horse). I will let you know when it becomes available.

There is a limited supply of Salmon Filets and Halibut from Doug’s Wild Alaska Salmon. Their Halibut and Salmon Wild Caught of the Alaska coast by Doug and his Family. The quality and taste are phenomenal!

My Daily Bread supply us with fresh, organic baked goods that are yummy! Be sure and check out Dabrielle’s offerings this week. For those of you who are Gluten Free, Dabrielle does offer Brownies and Sugar Cookies. Her Spelt Bread and Spelt Pumpkin Muffins are also good choices for those who cannot have wheat. Although Spelt does contain Gluten, it can be eaten by some folks who have a slight gluten intolerance! We never know what will be brought for the Farmers’ Sale Table, so be sure and place an order for what you want so you are not disappointed.

Marie of Bakery on Brooks is back in full swing with her her Gluten Free and Paleo goodies! She is a creative Baker (read Mad Scientist in the Kitchen) and has found the secret of Gluten Free goodies. Her Paleo Bites are fabulous – don’t know how she does it – but they are small and mighty bites of heaven! Try any of the varieties. I will stick with the Almond Joy thank you very much!

Cara of Golden Farms has Duck Eggs available! Get your order in early because there is a limited supply!

The 4 Pack of Honey from Dances With Bees has been a great seller of late! Everyone is wanted to find their favorite! Be sure and check out Jay’s Honey varieties! Have you seen the Blackberry Mead Vinegar Jay has listed in his offerings! WOW! It makes a great salad dressing! I also tried reducing it and used it as a glaze for Lamb Chops! Oh, yes, it was a winner!

Patti makes some outstanding Natural Body Products from the honey and beeswax. Her Gardener’s Friend Soap is fantastic!

Bo and Megan of My Quality Mushrooms had a very busy and productive Winter making many improvements to their Farm! They are concentrating their efforts on serving the restaurant community; however, I am talking with them about purchasing on a monthly basis. Please let me know if you are interested – we would have to have a minimum order.

STRAWBERRIES


Watsonia Farms Strawberries Arrived this past week! Mine were fabulous and besides just popping them in my mouth, they found their way into some Strawberry Gummies! Organic Strawberries will be available in quarts or gallons through the season – which doesn’t last long, so be sure and get yours soon!

Remember, these are ORGANIC Strawberries. They have not been sprayed with pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. They may not be ‘perfectly shaped’ but they will be fresh and flavorful! Pay attention now — this is important. Here is a hint – when you get your berries home, soak them in a solution of Vinegar and Water 1 part Vinegar to 3 parts Water (preferably filtered water or spring water). I use Apple Cider Vinegar (Bragg’s) however, white vinegar will work also. Soak those little red juicy globes of strawberry goodness for about a half hour; swish the water around when you think about it. The soak will remove any spores that may be present on the berries and will prolong the life of them greatly. After the soak, rinse well. I spin my berries dry (salad spinner) and then put in a glass container lined with a paper towel. I do not put the lid on tightly so that moisture does not accumulate and there is air flow! My berries keep til I finish the last one ~ sometimes up to 5 days later! Try it, it really does work! (Thanks Mom!)

Market News

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY! To all Mom’s that do their best to buy, prepare and feed their family the most healthy foods available. To mom’s that ask all the right questions of the farmers and the food they buy. To all mom’s that take time to make dinner from scratch. To mom’s that challenge school food by always making their child’s lunches. To mom’s that dole out regular doses of cod liver oil to their families. To mom’s that make regular batches of beef bone broth that stinks up the house but then makes delicious and nutrient dense soups with it. To all mom’s that have to respond to friends and relatives the reason their child can’t have the candy. There are so many more challenges we face but we stand strong in our belief that local, pastured, sustainably grown food is best for us. Happy Mother’s Day!

The market is open and ready for you to place orders online. You may pay here or when you pick up with either cash, check or a credit card. A 3% convenience fee is added to all credit card payments.

Ancient Awakenings will have a “Grape Water Kefir” class on Sunday, June 1st. The class will be held in a classroom near the market. Each person that attends will receive 2-3 tablespoons of organic cultures (water grains) and the knowledge to make water kefir indefinitely. You will also learn how to grow cultures in order to supply your family and friends with water grains as well. Limited number of spots available (10 maximum). Class is $60. Please register by placing your class order on the market.
