CLG:  Opening Bell: Collard Greens, Winter Squash, Apples, Coffee...

Good afternoon,
Well, Friday night was pretty cold, but we knew it had to come sometime. Much of our growing area had temps below 30 degrees, which means no more tender crops. But several of our growers use season extenders, like row covers and high hoops, so all is not lost. Start making your Thanksgiving menu now and stock up. Only 3 markets in November. Coming soon: ONLINE PAYMENT OPTION. More info to come. Also, please spread the word that CLG is the only YEAR-ROUND farmers market in Conway!

Check out all the Featured Products and use the SEARCH field on the main Market page to quickly find the items you want.

Come early on Friday for the best selection from the EXTRAS table.

The market is now +OPEN +for orders. Please check your email about 5 minutes after you place your order to make sure you get an order confirmation. Thank you for being a valuable part of CLG!

Have a great week!
Steve

ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market is Open!

Good Day Food Club,

The market is open with more variety than ever!

  • And what a week, Hardin Farms is also back on the market with tons and tons of pecans! I’ve been known to say that pecans are one of my favorite things about Arkansas…they’re a great addition to salads and are the main attraction in my favorite dessert.
  • More delicious preserved products from The Root Cafe. This time it’s honey pilsner pickles and pear sauceYUM!
  • Yesterday’s Food Club volunteers were treated to wild boar snacks generously donated by Ratchford Farms. Food Club is only made possible thanks to our incredible volunteers, and we’re always looking for more helping hands. E-mail littlerockfoodclub@gmail.com to get on our volunteer listserv and receive wonderful snacks, coffee, fellowship, and $5 market credit every time you answer the call.

I’ve just found out about an amazing new restaurant: The Table Cafe. They’re serving a free community meal the first Sunday of each month out at First Pres Argenta. All they ask is that you use the time you would spend preparing the meal to gather round the table with friends and family. There is no cost for the meal, but donations are welcome to help cover basic expenses so that everyone might enjoy the opportunity to dine together. They’ll be open tonight, but if you can’t make it in time simply follow them on facebook to stay in the loop on future meals.

Happy November!

Stones River Market:  Time to Order Local Food - RJ Retires

Stones River Market

How to contact us:
Our Website: stonesriver.locallygrown.net
On Facebook: www.facebook.com/StonesRiverMarket
On Wednesdays: Here’s a map.

Market News

Welcome to November. Did you remember to “Fall” back overnight? The Market is back open with plenty of locally grown and made products.

I want to thank RJ with Rock Hill Road Farm for being a part of the Market for so long. RJ has retired from selling eggs to pursue other hobbies she enjoys. Many people will miss her since she has been a fixture with us and those who shopped at the Market on the Square. With RJ’s retirement, a flock of chickens got on a bus and moved to Woodbury. Her chicks are now being raised by Flying S Farms. Ben and Catherine will now be selling eggs. Visit Catherine’s Facebook page to see how the chickens are being raised.

Chef Jenny has returned to the Market this week with SOS snack mixes, SOS Original Seasoning, and SOS Cinna-Spice.

Pumpkin, Cranberry & Pecan Special (3 – 2 oz bags for $8.00) This snack mix is a combination of toasted seeds, pecans, and cranberries that have been flavored with pumpkin spices and a little bit of honey. Enjoy this healthy treat with yogurt, granola, oatmeal or as a satisfying snack on its own.

Rocky Glade Farm is just about out of honey. Get yours this week. They also have half and full bushels of their Carolina Ruby Sweet Potatoes as well as bulb fennel and kohlrabi.

Thanksgiving is fast approaching. There is still time to reserve your holiday turkey from Wedge Oak Farm or West Wind Farms.

There are plenty of other products available this week. Browse the categories to see what your will find.

Thanks so much for your support of Stones River Market, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. We’ll see you on Wednesday at Southern Stained Glass at 310 West Main Street from 5:00 to 6: 30 pm!

Recipes

Please, share your recipes with us on the Recipes tab. We’d all love to know how you use your Stones River Market products, so we can try it too! If you have created a dish and want to share with everyone, please send it to me.

The recipe was recommended from Yummly website and uses a winter squash variety we have on the Market. The other varieties will probably also work.

Roasted Squash with Sage Bread Crumbs

Sage, a member of the mint family, livens up any dish. But remember, too much sage will make food taste bitter or medicinal. This holds truer for dried sage, which tends to sit in the spice rack for years, growing even mustier.

3–5 lb. kabocha squash
6 tbsp. butter
Sea salt and freshly ground pepper
2 cups fresh bread crumbs
2 tbsp. fresh sage, chopped

1.Preheat oven to 400°. Halve the kabocha squash crosswise, and scoop out and discard seeds. Rub each half with 2 tbsp. softened butter, season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper, and put on a baking sheet, cut side up. Cover with foil and roast until tender, about 1 hour.

2. Meanwhile, combine bread crumbs, 4 tbsp. melted butter, sage, and salt and pepper to taste in a bowl.

3. Uncover squash, divide mixture between halves, and bake until golden, 15–20 minutes more. Garnish with fresh sage sprigs.

I thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Champaign, OH:  You Really Got A Hold On Me

I don’t like you, but I love you…
Seems that I’m always thinkin’ of you
Smokey Robinson – You Really Got A Hold On Me)

I was up earlier than usual, this morning, with the time change and my baking schedule, but I was flipping through playlists, deciding what would be my backdrop for the morning of baking, and decided on The Beatles. I love their cover of the song lyric that I chose. And, the first line really made me think of this little local market of love…

We don’t just LIKE this little market, we LOVE this little market. And, for me, your market manager, I am ALWAYS thinking about this market, about you, the customers, and the vendors, about the products, and how we can make you all happier, make you feel the love even more…I am a constant thinking machine:) And, my main concern is that everyone is happy, everyone loves us, and everyone makes us their first thought for local shopping!!

I have a friend who is one of my most favorite people in the world. We spend a lot of time, together, through our friendship, through our business dealings, and through an event that we chair. She is younger than I am but we met through business, we grew through business, and we became friends. Our friendship works on many levels despite our age difference or maybe because of it:)

Anyway, we try to meet up, often, outside of businesses and work, to have a glass of wine, or dinner, or just unwind and touch base. The other night she came to my house. It had been a busy day for me, I was whipping up a quick dinner for both of us because we sometimes forget to take the time to eat during our manic days. She had not had a good day and she knew that she could unleash to me but after I let her go on and on, I stopped her and asked her why she liked coming to my house. She named off the welcome feeling she gets, the candles, the music, the cocktails, the food, the feeling of calm. I simply smiled at her, and she knew that it was time to just forget her day so that we could have a few laughs and then I sent her on her way.

Friends mean the world to me. Friends are my family, my people, they guide me, inspire me, fill me with happiness. I try to reflect all of that right back to them.

After she described how it feels to come to my house, I started to think about this market and how I hope that this is the feeling that you all get when you become part of this little local market of love…

I hope that you feel inspired, full of love, full of happiness, and that our market becomes your main source of local shopping, local nutrition, and local awareness.

It is impossible to just like this market, once you get to know this market. Chances are you are going to LOVE this market, you will begin to ALWAYS think ABOUT this market, and you will make us your one stop, your favorite stop, your stop filled with LOVE

It’s Sunday…think about those orders…the day is young and full of time to plan…

Peace and Love,
Cosmic Pam

Johnston Family Farm

Johnston Family Farm is a producer of all natural farm fresh raw milk from grass fed pastured cows. The Johnston family has owned and operated the farm since 1940. We produce all of the milk, cheese, and cream here on our farm and we encourage you to come see how we do what we do. Our cows are pastured and have access to fresh grass except for the few hours they are brought up to the barn to be milked. We milk Jerseys, Jersey-Holstein, and Jersey- Holstein-Swedish Red cross breeds and the sires have been picked from bulls that have been genetically tested for the A2 protein. In fact, most of our bulls are dominant A2/A2 carriers so after breeding these bulls for the last 8 years the majority of our cows are A2 carriers.

Middle Tennessee Locally Grown:  Manchester Locally Grown Online Farmer's Market - It's Time to Order

Manchester Locally Grown online farmers’ market is now open for ordering.

PLEASE NOTE a new closing time for orders: 10 pm on Tuesday evenings. This will give our farmers a little more time to harvest their products to fill your orders.

This week we are pleased to announce additional fall products from White City Produce and Greenhouses. Be sure to check out their cider and jelly, both in two flavors – muscadine and scuppernong.

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse reminds you that now is the ideal time to plant all perennials: cooler temperatures will develop strong root systems for good winter survival rates and prolific spring bloom.

The local baked goods and pork products that we list are both unique to the Manchester market. Herbal bath & body products, local honey, fresh-laid chicken & duck eggs, and plenty more products are to be found on our market. Give them a try!

REMEMBER:

  • PLEASE do not write out your checks ahead of your market pickup. Growers can sometimes remove items at the last minute, affecting your invoice. Please wait until your total is established at market.

  • If you do not receive an order confirmation within 5 minutes, your order has NOT been placed in the system. Log back in and press the Place Your Order button; then you should receive an e-mail to confirm the order. E-MAIL tnhomeschooler@yahoo.com OR CALL US at (931) 273-9708 if the problem persists so you will not be disappointed on market day.

  • Be sure to hit that Place Your Order button before 10 p.m. on Tuesday evening.

  • Take a look at our offerings and support your friends and neighbors who produce these quality items on their own farms. Remember: ordering will close on Tuesday evening at 10 p.m.

(L to R) Scuppernong Jelly and Muscadine Cider from White City Produce & Greenhouses, Toad Lily Plant from Dogwood Valley Greenhouses, Chamomile Tea from Triple B Farms, Mixed Greens from White City Produce & Greenhouses.

We’ll see you for pickup of your order on Thursday between 3:00 and 4:30 at Square Books, 113 E Main, Manchester. We can also hold your order in the refrigerator till Friday morning, if that’s more convenient for you. Just call (931) 273-9708 if you prefer to utilize this free service. Square Books will be open on Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Thanks so much for your support of Manchester Locally Grown Market, all of our growers, local food, and our right to eat it. Please encourage our local farmers by helping to spread the word about our wonderful market to everyone you know. Nothing makes a farmer more excited than seeing new customers on the market!

And that day, they will be able to buy items, as well.

    COMMUNICATIONS ISSUES
We continue to hear that our customers are having difficulty communicating with the CFM. Please remember you should NOT reply to an order confirmation, the blog e-mail, or a market e-mail that comes through mailgun.org.

Instead, you should begin a completely new e-mail. By doing this, your message will not become “lost” in the message history and be overlooked. You may also call Kir at 931-592-3399 (no voice mail).
    -————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
    PLACING AN ORDER
Before you order, be sure you see the little basket. If you do not, log out and log in again. If this fails, turn off your computer completely and start again. This includes ordering from smart phones.

If you want to leave a comment for a grower, be sure to put it in the “Leave comment for grower” area in RED beneath the item you’re ordering. Placing comments in the market manager section will not be seen by the growers.

Everyone is welcome, including those not currently customers or growers on the market.

    NEW DELIVERY DRIVER
Have you contacted Rachel Lynch, the new Sewanee delivery driver? E-mail: radelo50@yahoo.com or phone 931-598-0774.

Don’t forget the driver cannot accept payments of any kind on behalf of the CFM. Payment of all CFM orders MUST be made in advance of Tuesday’s delivery. Checks must be mailed in time to be posted to customer accounts before closing of market ordering on Monday. To ensure your account always has a positive balance, the CFM prefers payments in increments of at least $100.00. Mail checks made out to CFM to Kir Strobel, 744 Timberwood Trace, Monteagle, TN 37356.

Should at-home delivery not work for you, your second option is to leave your order at the Center to be picked up by you or a designée by 6 p.m. Wednesday. As with any left-behind order, there will be a $3.00 fee unless that order has been prepaid in full in advance. Don’t forget there is no freezer at the Center for the forseeable future, so it is imperative your items be picked up in a timely manner.

Heirloom Living Market Hamilton Mill:  'Bits and Bites' November 1, 2014

For Chrome users or plain text users,
you will find this easier to read and be able to see pictures if you go to the Market and choose Weblog …it’s easier on the eyes!

Greetings Lilburn, Crossfit and Hamilton Mill Market Folks:

Oh Wow! It is chilly and windy with a little-more-than-a dusting of the white stuff covering the ground this morning! The late night, misty kind of rain, left the tree limbs wet and the cold winds over night served to freeze the rain on limbs and leaves! Although I was having a bit of non-belief about the swiftness of how time has literally flown by since August, I am now in full acceptance that we are entering into the Winter season!

The Market is now Open for ordering and if you would like to fore-go reading the Newsletter —

Hop on over to Hamilton Mill Market

    Azure Standard

Order Deadline for November is Tuesday, November 4th at 6:00pm

Please share this information with friends and family to ensure that we will all have this great resource available to us!

Azure Standard offers over 9,000 items of which the majority are Organic (or at the very least non-GMO)! The website can be overwhelming, especially if you are a new customer. My humble suggestion is: use the ‘search’ feature to find items that you regularly purchase from Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Sprouts or wherever and see the savings. Save them to you ‘favorites list’ so they will be easy to find next time. When I first started ordering, that is the method I used the first couple of months. When I had some ‘extra time’ online during the month, I would ‘Shop By Category’ looking at only the ones that held some interest to me. I found that these two methods helped acclimate me to the company, the website and was the best use of my time!
Now, because I have items saved to my ‘favorites list’, shopping is fast and simple! Of course I still ‘explore’ categories or check out items that others have suggested.

Another idea – if you see something that only comes in a ‘bulk’ offering, check with friends or post a notice on the Facebook Page listed below and offer to share with one or more folks! This is a great way to get extra savings and help others at the same time.

    Here’s the scoop:

    A Few Volunteers Still Needed

If you are interested in helping out at the Crossfit Market, please contact Market Volunteer Coordinator, Chance Claar-Pressley. You can email Chance at chancita@gmail.com . Kathy could use some help every other week between 2:00pm and 3:30pm on Thursday as Farmers drop off the ordered items and they are distributed!

    Heartfelt Gratitude

“Thank You” to the Market Coordinators: Lauren Stephens at the Crossfit Market, Sarah Rockey at the Hamilton Mill Market and Kathy Barnes, at the Lilburn Market. These ladies give most of their day on Thursday to ensure that we all can enjoy the fruits of our Local Farmers labors! I know the amount of work and effort, patience and ingenuity Market Day involves and I appreciate their efforts more than words can express!

In addition I would like to thank the following folks who routinely volunteer to assist with set-up, Market and breakdown:
Geni Wallace, Bruce Wallace and sons, Susan Coker, Rebecca White, Nancy Tuck, Karen Thain, Sara Heath and Keb Barnes! And last but not least, Chance Claar-Pressley for coordinating all the great volunteers! You all “Rock”! The Market is a community and you all help keep it going!

Susan Martinson, a Market Member and All Saints Lutheran Church Member is also helping us at the Lilburn Market, setting up the Market display table as well as selling Organic, Free Trade Coffees, Teas and delicious Chocolate Bars. Do try the Midnight Sun if you like a full-bodied yummy morning coffee! All Saints is using this endeavor as a Fund Raiser, so please take a minute and check out the products. Products will be display and showcased at all of the Markets. Sue just got in “Organic Chocolate Chips” and you can check them out on Market Day! The Congregation and Pastor Stover have been wonderful friends to the Market and are very supportive of our efforts! Let’s return the favor!

The Happy Cows belonging to Sam Jones of Cedar Rock Dairy continue to produce wonderful milk (for our pets)! The cream line on the jars these last couple of weeks has been impressive! Keep up the good work, ladies! Located in Butler, Georgia, Sam’s cows enjoy grazing on 1200 acres of this Certified Organic Farm and we are fortunate that he is willing to transport this fresh, creamy milk to us. Working together, we need to ensure that we meet a minimum order for each Market so it remains economically viable for deliveries to continue! Share the goodness of Cedar Rock Dairy milk with friends and family!

Remember, you need 3 sets of jars to keep things flowing smoothly. If you order an extra one week, you likely will be missing one the following week. The Market can no longer absorb the cost if you receive your milk in plastic and you will be charged the difference. Your jars need to be ‘sparkling clean’ and completely dry (jar and BOTH lids)!

    Raw Milk Jar System
    A1 vs A2 Milk

Rusty Repp of Little Tots Estate offers the sweetest goat milk I have had since I was a child, growing up in Ohio! (Did you know that Rusty is from Ohio? True!) The milk comes from Nigerian Dwarf Goats who are known to have the highest Butterfat of any milking goats! The milk from Little Tots also makes wonderful cheese! It is great for pets with stomach issues, also! To keep The Black Lab, healthy, he enjoys some everyday!

Kathy Barnes of So-Koi not only helps out at the Markets, she is also the wonderful lady that makes the great lanyards, aprons, pillowcases and tiny purse bags (for carrying your own sweeteners, salts, etc.) Check out her offerings that are all hand made with love!

Kathy is also coordinating the Group Buys for Real Salt and Einkorn Wheat. Sign up sheets will be on the Check out table at each Market.

    … this and that …

I continually thank God for the many blessings He has bestowed on me in my life which definitely includes the Market and all of the wonderful folks I have come to know. I am here to serve you, the Members and the Farmers.

The Black Lab is snuggled at my feet in his warm bed here in the office. To my great surprise he significantly cut short his usual 2 hour foray in the yard this morning! Could it be that his old bones are feeling this cold weather? I better make sure he gets enough Bone Broth to help keep his joints supple!

The colder weather inspired some serious kitchen time yesterday that will carry on through the weekend! Beef and Lamb and Water Buffalo Bones were roasted yesterday and put on for Bone Broth. Part of the broth will be made into a yummy Veggie Soup with Green Beans, Carrots, Onions, Green Peppers, Tomatoes, Corn and whatever other goodies I find in the freezer from the Harvest this past Summer! I defrosted a Eye of Round Roast yesterday and put a rub on it this morning, so it will go in the oven later today. I am thinking of serving it with Sweet Potatoes, Spinach and Tomato Salad with goat cheese, Quinoa and some frozen Peaches for dessert!

A new batch of Tea for Kombucha is on the stove and I have Beets to start some Beet Kvass and Nappa Cabbage to start some Sauerkraut. What goodies are you making this weekend?

I wish you all a happy weekend and a wonderful week! Don’t forget to Vote on Tuesday and while you are at it Fly the Flag!

Heirloom Living Market Lilburn:  "Bits and Bites" November 1, 2014

Hop on over to Lilburn Market

If you have your beverage of choice in hand and have a few minutes to catch up with Market news, then read on…

Miss Vicky of Fry Farm is offering: Delicious and adorable ‘Gold Nugget’ Winter Squash, Contneder Green Beans, Collard Greens 2 kinds of Kale and Hakuri Turnips! I really like the Hakuris sauteed in a bit of butter or dehydrated with a bit of sea salt! (wonderful alternative to chips!)

David and Shalley Carrell of Carrell Farms Check out their offerings from their Bulk Ground Buff to Steaks and Roasts! Try a Brisket smoked! Delicious! Marie Wheeler of Bakery on Brooks has created a fabulous new cookie! Almond Sandies and they are buttery, have just the right amount of crunchy texture and are wonderful with a glass of milk, a hot cup of coffee of tea! Jay and Patti of Dances With Bees have Honey offerings as well as some other great products! The Candles are made of pure beeswax and the Lady Bug is as cute as it can be! I love the rolled beeswax candles also. Patti makes some awesome Personal Care products as well!

Jay has managed to slip a couple of new products in his offerings! I ordered the BBQ Honey a month or so ago and have used it on Wings, Chicken Breasts and a Pork Tenderloin and Lamb Ribs! Oh, WOW! Try this amazing Honey/Glaze! It’s subtly spicy and smokey! Wow!
